it was okay for the price... but the excellent location (just 2 min walk to the East Gate of the Taj Mahal) is the main asset. nice courtyard and okay food - the Sheela was actually recommended to us as one of the only places in Agra where you don't get sick, and we can confirm this :-) Highly recommended: walk to the Agra River before sunrise, get a boat ride to the other side and enjoy an alternative view of the Taj without the company of 1000 other tourists :-)

We booked this place for two nights and regretted it as soon as we arrived. The rooms were of poor standard, uncomfortable, no air con working and infested with mosquitoes. The staff did spray the room to help clear the mossie problem. The best thing about this place is the close proximity to the east gate of the Taj Mahal. Also be aware that the hotel is situated inside the no vehicle zone, so you will be thrown out of your taxi about 300 metres away. Also our bathroom shared an open window near the ceiling with the nieghbours bathroom, not nice.

As soon as we arrived in India we bought a cell phone for $20 and called our hotels to make a reservation. (Hotel Sheela: 91 562 2333074 ) this is better than email reservations.

We arrived by night train, took a pre-paid rickshaw to the Eastern entrance of the Taj. (50 rupees) Walked about 30 feet and found the hotel very easily. Staff was friendly, check-in was simple, as they were expecting us.

Got up at 6, took lovely Taj photos at sunrise (and no crowds), came back to eat a hot breakfast at 8:30.

As in most budget hotels in India, there was only cold water, but staff kindly brought a bucket of steaming hot water so we could comfortably have a sponge bath.

***Best of all: a quiet night's sleep, no traffic sounds, as there are no cars driving around the hotel. Beds were clean, bathroom too.

Awful hotel - nothing like the reviews! Dirty room, curtains hanging off rail, no hot water, filthy bathroom. Terrible breakfast - can't recommend anything other than has a good location but would have rather stayed outside non pollution zone in a decent hotel than here. Don't go!

This very small "hotel" was so close to the gates of the Taj that was the main attraction. Even though they did not have hot water..although they advertised they did..it was so stinking hot a cold shower was more than welcome. The best feature of Hotel Sheela was the grounds. It was so peaceful, relaxing and quiet it was such a welcome place to chill. The value for the rooms was more than reasonable, the food was good. They said they would hold a room for me and they did..all in all a very pleasant experience.
