“Ok but they rely too much on their status with guide books!”
Reviewed June 16, 2013

We stayed in the 'deluxe' room with air con, 800rps/night.
To be honest it felt claustrophobic as there are no windows and the room is very damp. The air con was leaking and when we told the reception they said they couldn't do anything about it as it was Saturday and electricians wouldn't be able to come until Monday. So the unit leaked all night onto the floor in a bucket.
We then asked for bed covers numerous times to which the responses were: "5 minutes". They never came.
But the room was clean and comfortable despite all the above.
Food was overpriced: a soda is 30rs!
\You can find better elsewhere.
Location good next to East gate so easy walk at 5am for the Taj Mahal but we had to wake the reception to get the gate open!

Located in an area which has no traffic, Hotel Sheela is the perfect place to visit the Taj Mahal from. Although the ticket office is 1 km away (you can get a ticket for the next day and have a nice walk), the South gate is nearby and it's also possible to get a ticket from there. We wanted to visit the Taj Mahal as early as possible and were the first tourists to take pictures at 5.30.
Although the outside looks not very luxury, you will be surprised when you see the rooms. We had an aircon room, but air-cooled is good too. The aircon was only 800 rupees. Big plus is the nice garden, from which you also have wifi access (if it works). It's great to have breakfast or dinner here.

Room Tip: The air-cooled rooms are located in the center of the building, which looks quite nice. We had the a...

Hotel Sheela is a charming basic hotel - you get what you pay for (£10/night for double room)
Excellent food which is all food is prepared with mineral water and beautiful garden. Wifi is a bit temperamental but it's a great location - 2 minute walk to the Taj Mahal. We visited at sunrise and as your bag gets searched on arrival, you only need to bring your camera so as to avoid bag search queues.
Tips:
Bring a padlock for your bedroom - they do provide you with one
Bring a kirkoy to use as a sheet - they provide a pillow and under sheet but nothing to have over you
Recommend booking an AC room - we had an air cooler and it was noisy and got warm....

You cannot access the hotel directly with a cab. Cars may not enter the area arround the Taj Mahal, so either you walk a bit or take a Riksha to the hotel. Within the hotel area it is very quite and you can relax in the garden. There is a hotel restaurant which hasn't the best food in the world but it is okay and because of the silence there we mostly ate there. The rooms were very clean and they are not too expensive (Just a few ants and sometimes geckos entered the room but compared to other places in india this is actually not even worth to mention). I would definately go back there again. It was a recommendation of a friend and I can recommend it to you guys as well.

We stayed there for one night only (thank God!) and were glad to leave! The room was dirty, smelling damp, with all kinds of bugs and ants. The bathroom was even more terrible, really old and decrepit, we barely dared to take a shower. Ok, we only took a fan room but it was so badly isolated that even at night it was still hotter inside than outside, we just couldn't breathe (nor sleep). It was the worst night of our 8 months trip! The staff wasn't really friendly and even tried to charge us 20Rs for a pair of (used) shoe cover to visit the Taj Mahal (they are given for free at the entrance!). In short, don't go there because it's the "top choice" in the Lonely Planet, it seems like it changed a lot in recent years...

Given that it was winter, I would have preferred to stay somewhere warmer. We had to switch rooms to get a better shower. The location was solid. I have to imagine there are better places to stay but I survived.

We spent two nights in two double rooms. The location on the hotel is just great, only 100 m from the eastern gate of Taj Mahal. Prices were very reasonable. Garden also very nice and quiet.

Only minus was that there was a very bad toilet smell from the area at night time. Maybe a one-timer, but not nice...
