“At least close to Taj Mahal”
Reviewed September 20, 2012

Our stay in Agra was brief so we decided to stay in a Hotel very close to Taj Mahal. According to Lonely Planet Hotel Sheela was recommended. Unfortunately we were a little disappointed by the room.
We have booked a deluxe room for 800 per night originally. But by the time we arrived we were told that the AC did not work. instead we got a discount of 100 per nght, but compared to a simple non AC room that was a ripoff!!
thus, we hardly were able to sleep at night as it was way to hot, thus turned on the fan, which was sooo loud we had to use oropax.
Next we had some nice guests in our room. the first day I saw a gecko in our bathroom, a few minutes before we checked out I saw a mouse crossing the room as well. yey!!!

Only good thing about Sheela is the very good location and well the fact that the other hotels, recommended by lonely planet (which are more south of Taj Mahal) are locatred in a VERY ppor area where there have been LOTS of beggars. I'm not sure whether it's very safe for tourists there!! On the contrary Hotel Sheela's street is protected by police. (Well, at leat it was when we where there which was at the end of the ramasan - there was a huge celebration)

This is a fantastic hotel for backpackers or people who dont mind basic, but functional rooms to be in super fantastic locations.
This was probably the hotel we were most concerned about from what we booked on line as it was the cheapest, and in the tourist capital of Agra we were wondering if we went too low. Fortunately for us we found the hotel was perfect!
The location is why you would stay here. It is actually inside the security zone for the Taj so you have to get there on cycle rickshaw as cars are not allowed in (or walk). I did not see another hotel as close. Walk out the door and you are on the edge of the market district, which was good to wander around and you can be at the Taj for the sunrise no problems at all.
Make sure you visit the Agra Fort too - not just the Taj. it is equally spectacular.

First of all: you pay for the location (next to the Taj Mahal) and it is still one of the nicer budget-ones in the whole Taj Ganj area.
The cleanliness of the old rooms varies massively: whereas my room was okay, the one of my friends was full of little insects and flies in the bathroom, mould and a more then unpleasant smell. But as I found out after the second night: mine was infested with bedbugs and I left the place itching all over.
The water supply was not working at all for a whole day and there are regular powercuts (but that is a common Agra problem as it seems).
The staff i nice as long as there are no complains, then they get annoyed easily.
The restaurant is in a really pleasant garden und does good breakfast.Nice place to relax and enjoy a book without the common noise from the streets

Although the rooms in this hotel are rather basic, they are perfect for a short trip to Agra to visit the Taj Mahal. The hotel is located about 2 mins from the East Gate of the Taj itself and also benefits from having a very cheap but very delicious on site restaurant. As most trips to Agra would only need to be one night this hotel is perfect for all your sightseeing needs.

Accommodation in a facility adjacent to the east entrance of the Taj Mahal, ideal for visiting at the rising of the sun (note: the ticket office is located 1 km away, better to buy the ticket the day before). The good news is that being a pedestrian area, no traffic noise, the air is clean and out of the hotel there isn't the usual crowd of tuk-tuk drivers. The rooms are very basic, with one double bed and two chairs. At night it was cold and the staff gave us a couple of blankets more. The bathroom is in line with Indian standards, with a shower and a sink in the room. The hot water is always there. The quality/price ratio is good, the structure is comparable to a hostel. Excellent cleanliness and helpful of staff. The inside restaurant offers excellent Indian meals and the inner courtyard with chairs and benches offers a pleasant oasis in the middle of the green.

An absolute bargain! We stayed in room 1 which was about as basic as you can get. No A/C, 1 small window and rough around the edges. But for £4 a night what do you expect? The BIG bonus with Sheela is its location only a stones throw from the Taj Mahal. A good restaurant set in lovely gardens to boot.

Tip: Wake up the security guard at 5:30am to let you out of the complex and beat the queues at the Taj. You won't regret the early start

This hotel was clean with good value and surrounded by beautiful green areas. The first day we stayed in a beautiful room with nice a.c but then we were moved to a one that had a swamp cooler that didn't work at all!!!! so better just try hard to get one with a real a.c.
