“When in Agra stay in Taj”
Reviewed June 4, 2009

My girl friend had this dream of visiting Taj and I decided to give her a little surprise and organized a trip to taj. To top it all I booked us in Taj Hotel which is now known as The Gateway. Stay was absolutely amazing, the room had a nice view of the pool, rooms are designed in line with the mughal architecture, lot of wood work and deft little touches which make it a romantic place to stay in. My girl was thoroughly impressed with me for a change.
Hotel has amazing buffet breakfast and couple of other restaurants which serve amazing food. If you need a romantic outing to Taj and need an affordable five star place to stay in - Stay at Gateway.

We (family with 2 small children) booked the hotel on Taj Innercircle points. The hotel is not a real Taj hotel, but a second tier property. nevertheless, we found the hotel pleasant, the staff very friendly and helpfull, adding to the overall positive experience. Although initially only booked for 2 people, an extra bed was placed in the room for one of the kids without any problem.
The rooms are clean and spacious. The view on the Taj is there, albeit very distant. The food was fine, although the evening restaurant was less suitable for children.
The pool is a bit outdated as is the gym, but its all there and we enjoyed it a lot. In the evening, local 'artists' perform a puppet show and magic tricks in an effort to sell puppets and magician-stuff. Entertaining nevertheless.
From the hotel, you can book a car or autoriksha to get to the Taj, which is 15 minutes away. Apart from the Taj Mahal, we only found the fort worth while.

  • Liked — The large garden with the pool.
  • Disliked — Little to do in the direct vicinity of the hotel.

This hotel is well located and very pleasant. We had a great stay. The one criticism is a very average breakfast in a very uninspiring restaurant which did not reflect the general beautiful decor of the hotel. Otherwise our room was excellent (and had a great view of the Taj!) and the staff were attentive and helpful at all times. I would definitely stay here again.

The Gateway is an older hotel, well kept, has a charm of its own. The rooms were clean, the bathroom okay, I'd bring my own toiletries though. The shampoo smelled like insect repellant. I'll never forget the first glimpse I got of the Taj Mahal right from the window of our room. The staff is friendly and attentive, the decor a bit dated. The cafeteria was full of Americans, the Indian restaurant next door more tranquil, the food okay.

  • Liked — the view, the staff, the security
  • Disliked — the cafeteria

Never in the history of humanity has a lazier bunch of tip-seeking layabouts been collected in one place. It must be difficult for staff in a tourist trap to maintain enthusiasm but this lot don't try. The staff go around in pairs and affect not to see guests who might want something. The counter-staff are brusque, the food adequate, the bathroom in our room wasn't terribly clean. The staff go door to door with bowls of rotten fruit in an attempt to get a tip (they want the bowl back presumably because the manager would kill them if s/he found out). Presumably the fruit is fished out of the bins. This is a hotel that doesn't care and doesn't try. It is disappointing because some of the hotels in the Taj group are quite good (the Taj Palace in Dehli for example)> This lot really don't try and they don't deserve your money.

The hotel is a fantastic place and is different from other Star hotels, in that it looks and feels more like a old haveli and the best part we loved is the high cots the hotel offers.

The food is excellent and tempting.

  • Liked — The old vintage style cot and external look and heritage tag!
  • Disliked — none i can think of.

Room was great. View of Taj Mahal was disappointing - through polluted skies, and not lit up at night, but still worth being able to see from your window.
Excellent service, great food, close to the Taj for access to all sights.
Staff attentive, amenities excellent.
Rates very reasonable.
