Stayed two nights at the Agra Oberoi Amarvilas, driving from Delhi (approx 4 hours).

First impressions are WOW! Beautiful building and perfect location.

Our room was fairly small, with the usual trimmings etc, that you'd expect in a 5 star hotel.

The food is average, at best. I was staying with an Indian friend, he thought it pretty poor too! Dinner on the terrace (set menu of usual Indian fayre was $100 US each plus drinks).

Pool was great, with a snack menu and pool butlers who were competent.

Spa was very overrated. Why have a Thai company (Banyan Tree) running a spa in India? Massage treatments were OK, but about as authentic Indian as Tom Yam Goong.

The steam and sauna are mixed, which is very unusual. This might be cool in Europe, but here it means sitting and steaming in swimming costumes and T shirts (American guests).

Sometimes a hotel shows its true colours in the way they deal with problems. I bought a cigar in the bar which wouldn't draw at all. Most places replace a cigar like that, not here. So I paid $20 for nothing. A VSOP brandy was $15 US for a measure just short of 25ml. Probably the most expensive brandy I've ever tasted in any hotel anywhere.

Overall, a hotel to walk around, admire and take pictures. We felt like we were staying in a photo studio with the number of flash bulbs going off, as the majority of guests ate and drank OUTSIDE and came in only to sleep and take pictures.

I guess you only visit the Taj Mahal once (with the same partner at any rate) so they don't need to worry unduly about repeat business.

I stayed once before at the Sheraton, Aggra. One third of the price, but you still get a view of the Taj (at a premium). I'd return to the Sheraton next time.

This was one of four Oberoi hotels in which we stayed on our Indian tour. By the standard of the others we had some minor disappointments here and wonder if they live on their proximity to the Taj Mahal. The breakfast buffet choice and the ambience of the main, Belleview, restaurant were disappointing. All rooms give a view of the Taj but we failed to do our research and had a room with no balcony or terrace. The view of the Taj was spoilt somewhat by the small window panes, we upgraded to a terrace and would advise future visitors to ensure they have a balcony or terrace.
The above negatives were offset by the superb Oberoi standards of friendly and efficient service and beautiful grounds.

I have been to the Taj Mahal twice before this but this time it was simply the best. We stayed in the Kohinnor suite for a nite and I must say there is no other way of expiriencing the glorious beauty of the Taj from dawn to dusk. It was the most mesmerizing experience. This is by far the best place to enjoy the beauty of Taj from the minute you wake up to the time you fall asleep. The ambience and the decor of the room was simply breath taking. It far exceeded my expectations. The service was more then excellent. The hotel staff was very very helpful and it was best hotel experience I have ever had. We wanted to enjoy every minute we could in our room, so we had arranged for dining in our suite and it was mind blowing. They had decorated the table with beautiful roses and candles and the food was excellent. It did not feel like you were in India. The service was fantastic. It was worth every penny.

This is a totally unique hotel, the only one with direct views of the Taj Mahal (all rooms overlook it but you need to be on a higher floor to get a decent view).

The hotel is impressive, if a little unatmospheric. The food at the Indian restaurant is absolutely divine, it is a must. The hotel also served one of the best breakfasts.

The rooms were lovely with very large bathroom and separate dressing area.

The staff were friendly and the hotel offers a complimentary cart ride to the Taj Mahal (best to visit early am).
