We loved this hotel. The staff were very friendly and the food was very good - the best breads we had on our trip to India but the property itself was stunning and the view from our balcony of the Taj was amazing.

It is undescribable...the view from the room! Almost all of Taj! (And by the way, every single room in the hotel has a view of the Taj!) It is exotic! Like a dream! You wake with the Taj in front of you...You hit the bed with the Taj in full view! Huge gallery where we sat - watching the Taj - while having multiple cups of Tea... more than made up for the desire to go to Taj again!

One of the fundamental challenges of visiting the Taj is not wanting to leave...And only Oberoi Amar Vilas can fulfil that desire...since even after you leave the Taj, the Taj still remains right in front of you! You see the Taj till you are in the hotel...! No cost is too much for this experience! Every moment in this hotel is priceless!

The architecture of the building, the design, the courtyard, the entrance, the lobby, the waiting space... words are not enough to describe the grandeur, the excellence... the experience...

More than all of this is the team...incredible as it is, they remember names of guests after just one meeting... they have conversations... and great conversations. They had the nth star to the property.

No rating is enough for this hotel. It has to be experienced. No review will give a real flavor of what it is to be in this hotel. Go there and experience... I doubt if anyone would want to leave this hotel!

Worth what we pay (and it is not less at all!)

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to share your valuable comments regarding your stay on Trip Advisor.

I am glad that the hotel, its services and the inspired by the Moorish and Mughal architecture were up to your satisfaction. The hotel offers breathtaking views from the room, lobby and lounge which are a real escape from the city of the Taj.

However, we believe that it is our people who are our greatest assets, as they endeavor to create personalized experiences for our guests which translate into memories for a lifetime. I will be most delighted to share your review with all members of the staff as it is a great source of motivation

Here's what you need to know about the Oberoi in Agra ;
- It's the most convenient hotel to the Taj in Agra period: there is a short path right from your hotel and they will provide a free golf cart
- If you are going to the Taj, and want comfort away from the chaos of the city of Agra, you have to stay here, there is no other choice
- Each room has a Taj view- however the Taj is NOT lit up at night and is right next to a crematorium meaning- there is constant smoke next to it from wood burning fires combined with a cocktail of massive air pollution every day -- so you will see the Taj from your room, however, it'll be shrouded by a fog/smog/smoke concoction - you can make out the Taj, but it isn't clear
- The exterior of the hotel is splendid, just splendid, there are many pools, etc. Just fabulous.
- The rooms left me with something to be desired, and were not anything compared to the Oberoi in Bangalore for example, or the Leela in Delhi.
- We stayed in a Premier room with no balcony for over $650 USD/night - the room was quite small, we were in a double with a single sink in the bathroom
- The floors are all tile, and the beds were very comfortable - but the room wasn't opulent by any manner, it was comfortable, but not opulent, nor spacious.
- they do have a butler system, where you press a button on the wall and he shows up, that was handy when we had used room service trays
- the restaurant was full -- a common refrain from other travelers year round, so I am not sure if hotel guests get to eat in there, however, the porter told us we could sit in the other restaurant and order from the one that was full -- net/net we didn't try the restaurant
- The room service was good, offering both continental and an Indian fare
- Net/Net - if you are going to spend this much -- I'd get the room with the balcony, as the windows are foggy/dirty and the air is foggy/dirty so you'd see the taj better from your balcony than your room
- This is the best way to see the Taj and to stay out of the chaos that is called Agra, there is no other hotel nicer (we've stayed in others throughout the year), so 'if you are going to Agra to see the Taj -- you have to stay at the Oberoi'.

Room Tip: Get a room with a balcony over looking the pools for the best view of the taj, higher floors are preferred.

We stayed here for two nights over the last weekend. I must say, without the service provided by the hotel, my trip to Agra would have been ruined.
1) The hotel provides direct airport pickup from Delhi Airport. It costs USD300 one way, but well worth it, as it was safe and free from touts. I tried looking for transport from tripadvisor's forum and other travel sites. Over the next few weeks, I was bombarded by emails from all sorts of agents and providers, I was terrified and worried. Fortunately the hotel was willing to send a car and driver to pick us.
2) Hotel room was very nice, as all face the Taj Mahal.Very attentive service but I find the check-in process very pushy. Maybe there were too many check ins over the weekend.
3) Hotel provides wake up call for morning Taj Mahal visit, and they even serve coffee with banana bread before the trip. The hotel also provides buggy from hotel to Taj Mahal (short of 200 meter to the gate)
3) Hotel arranged guide for a fee to go Taj Mahal. The guide is of utmost necessity. After our morning visit, we decided to go again on our own to the Taj Mahal for a sunset tour. It was a big mistake. The short 200 meter walk from where the buggy stops to the Taj Mahal gate, we were bombarded by touts, trying to help us take photos, be our guide, selling souvenirs etc etc. It was like being chased by zombies in those Hollywood movies and it took forever to get rid of them! Ask for Arif, he is a good guide, and a good photographer. He helped us take many pictures, in Bollywood pose!
4) Hotel concierge tried to arrange for us to watch a theater production, confirmed many times over but just two hours before the show, they told us it was cancelled due to Diwali. This is a poor organization on the hotel part, as I don't believe they didn't know about the cancellation before hand.
5) Esfahan serves excellent indian cuisine. If you can't get a table, just go to the western restaurant opposite, Bellevue, and you can still order the same food from Esfahan.
6) Didn't get to try the spa, as it was fully booked. Some guests told us it was not good.
7) The hotel has one of the best GMs I've ever met. Mr. Ankush, is so swift and precise in organising and meeting our needs I don't think any of those GMs from Four Seasons could resolve a problem as well as him. As soon as he found out we had problem with the concierge in organising our tours (second problem from the concierge), he managed to call in a guide within minutes, and organised an itinerary so good, he made our day. Well done!
8) This is just my second Oberoi experience, and I can safely say they rise above Four Seasons and St Regis in terms of amenities and service.

Room Tip: 1) Book a guide from hotel to go Taj Mahal, ask for Arif. 2) Concierge desk is not well manned, be sure who you speak to and follow up with the same person. 3) Book Esfahan restaurant well ahead. 4) Esfahan serves excellent indian cuisine, if you can't get a table, just go to the restaurant opposite, Bellevue, you can still order the same food from Esfahan

This is the hotel to stay in when visiting Agra and we did so for two nights. The view of the Taj Mahal from everywhere in the hotel made it a "must stay here" for us. Absolute poverty is right outside the door of this hotel but within its perimeter you feel safe, secluded and cut off from this sad reality.

The bedroom, situated on the 4th floor, was quite wonderful. In addition to the stunning view, the rooms were clean, well fitted and extremely comfortable. The tea delivered at 5.30 in the morning, before a visit to the Taj Mahal to see the sunrise, was very welcome and served with a smile.

We couldn't get a table in the speciality restaurant so ate twice in Bellevue, the international restaurant. The lay out is quite unusual. They attempt to deliver intimacy whereas we felt the screens produced a feeling of isolation. At night there is nothing to see but the tables for two face the windows and the screens cut off the rest of the diners. The food was alright but nothing special. The same was true of breakfast.

We made use of the spa and had the Oberoi massage. The spa staff seem a little detached and automated. There was nothing we could put our finger on but it didn't feel personal and we didn't feel pampered.

The staff wear fantastic uniforms. They are all very polite, attentive and friendly, however something was lacking. They seem to know that this is the hotel to stay at in Agra and rely upon this reputation to carry them through. Often we walked through reception and there was nobody attending the two desks and it wasn't clear who to ask. We had problems with the internet and whilst we were given an extra hour free it was almost grudgingly. There had been a couple of short power outages but this was dismissed as the cause.

We would recommend staying at this hotel as there is nowhere quite like it but do not expect service quality at the level seen in other Oberois.
