“Incomparable view”
Reviewed November 15, 2012

Stayed two nights in room overlooking the pool with balcony, with the Taj right in front of us. Quite an amazing view! The room was quite large. Service was good, particularly given that this is a high turnover hotel with most groups and customers staying only a few nights. If visiting the Taj, I cannot imagine a better place. The lounge made lovely drinks and the balcony provided a beautiful setting for evening drinks (until the mosquitoes arrived). The complimentary golf cart service to and from the Taj was wonderful. The spa and gym facilities were excellent, as was the service and food in the pool area. We very much liked the tipping policy at all the Oberoi hotels, which made our stays so much more enjoyable. At the end, we simply put the tips in an envelope and dropped it into the tip box at each property.

Room Tip: Ask for room with a balcony. Although all rooms have views of the Taj, it is quite an experience to...

This was a highlight of our trip to India. I can not say enough good about this hotel. We arrived late in the evening and the restaurants were closed. We ordered room service and the chef made special meals for us that were not on the menu. The meal was beyond my expectations. The breakfasts were also great because I was able to have Eggs Benedict (my guilty pleasure).
The Oberoi Amarvilas has a one tip tip policy which was so helpful for us as we didn't need to keep change on us as we moved around the hotel. When we checked out we deposited our tips in the "tip box" -- this simplified our stay.

Room Tip: Our room was on the second floor and the view of the Taj was wonderful -- after the morning fog brok...

We stayed at the Amarvilas for 2 nights in September, as part of an Oberoi Exotic Vacations package (travelling from Delhi to Agra, and continuing on to Jaipur and Udaipur). We made our own arrangements with a private driver service between the Oberoi properties, and would be happy to share the contact details of the driver and company (from whom we had an excellent service) should you message us.

Our room at the Amarvilas was fairly compact, with a good sized balcony, and a great view of the Taj Mahal across the hotel pool. The pool and terrace bar are good fun, and perfect places to relax after the early morning run out to the Taj – tickets can be purchased at the hotel (at the standard price) and there is a complimentary golf buggy service to and from the Taj gates.

Something not to miss – the mango Kulfi – the other Oberoi hotels don’t seem to have the same flavour! Do note that there is an additional entertainment tax of 7% added to meals at the Esphahan restaurant; of course the food, service and entertainment were all very good.

One of the best meals of our trip was ordering room service to our balcony overlooking the Taj Mahal just as the sun set. The hotel staff had this operation down to a fine art, everything we needed was on hand so that we could be alone and enjoy the food, sky and view in peace.

A gripe across all the Oberoi hotels we stayed in; the Wifi costs approximately 990 Rupee a day (USD18), progressively cheaper should you pay for a weeks worth of internet, etc. As our stay was part of an Oberoi Exotic Vacations package, it was a shame that we could not have been offered a reduced internet rate for constant access across our 12 night package.

This is a modern hotel built along the lines of an Indian palace and the result is exceptional. After the dirt of Agra and the overwhelming beauty of the Taj Mahal it was a very welcome and soothing place to come home to. The restaurants were very full when we were there so book early if you want to avoid disappointment. Food and service was good everywhere. We felt our stay was too short at this hotel.

Superb understated elegance and calm exude from this hotel, built in the style of a Maharaj's palace.

It's entrance is across a water feature, into a large, domed reception area, with the relaxing sounds of a musician playing a flute, and the tinkling of water. The circular lobby is very sparsely furnished, but beautifully decorated, with just staff waiting to greet you on arrival with towels and drinks, etc. All stresses of the outside world immediately start to dissipate!

Staff lead you to a very comfortable library/lounge to complete the registration formalities, before leading you to your room. The room itself is very large, with balcony, looking straight towards the Taj Mahal, and over the magnificent gardens, swimming pools and grounds. Absolutely stunning! Unfortunately for us, Agra was shrouded in fog, and the Taj Mahal was barely discernible, even though it was only about 500mtrs away.

The hotel runs you to and from the Taj Mahal in an electric buggy, right to the security point, which we did both in the evening and the early morning.

We dined in their fine dining Indian restaurant and would not fault it. Again, a musician was present playing gentle music throughout dinner.

Staff were wonderfully attentive, friendly and professional.

We spent 4 days at the Oberoi. It wasn't cheap, but you get what you pay for. This hotel was the highlight of our 2.5 week tour of India. The scene upon arrival at night was breathtaking. The next morning the property was just as incredible. The views of the Taj, the un-paralleled service, the grand property itself made the Oberoi an unforgettable experience. Perfect.

The only thing that could have been better during our stay was the spa. It was almost $300 for a couples massage that was average at best.

The only downside of our experience was the commute from Dehli to Agra. I had read in the travel books that it was approximately a 2 hour drive which I thought was doable. I contacted the Oberoi to arrange transport for us (the driver and vehicle were great). It was a 3.5 hour hair-raising drive to Agra and approximately 4.5 hours back. The whole transportation system in India has alot of room for improvement. They use unmarked speed bumps to control the speed of traffic so be prepared to be airborne.

Ask the hotel to arrange a tour guide for the Taj. It was very cheap and made the whole experience quite educational.
