“Impressive service”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 8, 2007

We stayed in many fantastic hotels across Rajasthan but this one excelled in it's quality of service and the staff who anaged tom combine professionalism with frinendliness and 'fun'. It was significantly superior to the much-lauded Oberoi Udaivilas in Udaipur.

This was our last night in India after a month trip and this property is worth every cents you pay for it!!!

The view is superb, the rooms are great, the service is perfect, the staff is professional and smiling (and they refuse personal tips: this is the first time that they really do, especially in India)

The little -big- plus was the desert swimming-pool that is (first time in India) heated: it was a huge pleasure to relax and swim in warm water under the stars after spending 5 hours in the Taj Mahal (that is absolutely fabulous).

Very good room service (we finally could eat a steak) even if the choice is not huge the food is very good and so are the wine too.

And definitely the best breakfast we had during our trip (and probably the more expensive too) but danish and pastries were great, the choice is wide, fresh and they even had real French cheeses...

... this hotel is a dream!

This was the most expensive hotel of our whole India trip but the view from our room and the room balcony was worth it. Sitting on the balcony and taking in the Taj Mahal view will stay with us forever.

We were very impressed by the hotel itself, the large and clean room, the incredible service and the nice facilities. The hotel pool was very nice. The food was very good. The staff were helpful and friendly.

Like a previous reviewer, I travelled to India to celebrate my 40th birthday, and wanted to spend the actual day and day after in Agra. I would agree with the person that said the main attraction of the hotel is the view of the Taj Mahal. The rest of the hotel is as good as you would expect, though the breakfast was limited and disappointing compared to some hotels we stayed in. The room amenities were excellent, but completely overshadowed by the view out the french doors! A really nice touch was the delicious birthday cake and candle the hotel provided. The hotel also provides "golf buggies" to transport you to the Taj Mahal since motor vehicles are not allowed near it.

The Amarvilas was the second of five Oberoi Hotels on our recent trip to India. It was a charming hotel, and the views of the Taj just wonderful. The Taj Mahal was the highlight of our trip,(didn't think it would be, but it was) just mindblowing, and to be able to see it from your room is truly wonderful. There cannot be many better views in the world. The hotel was a lovely oasis amongst the chaos of Agra, and we could not fault it. The staff were friendly and efficient. The rooms spacious and comfortable and everything you would expect from the high standards of Mr. Oberoi. The pool and grounds were beautiful, and having the Taj as a background was just magical. It was a lovely touch being taken as far as vehicles are allowed by golf buggy. We loved Agra, and we loved the Amarvilas, and would not hesitate to recommend it. Warning though - Agra is very hazy, in spite of their attempts to keep it 'green', and the views are not always clear. Take a photo from your room whenever you have the opportunity. On the morning we left we could not even make out the shape. Some people in their reviews have complained about the view, saying the Taj was too far away and that there was scrub land in between, or that they wanted a room on a higher floor. Personally we thought it was wonderful, and even from the lobby on the ground floor the view was good (they sit you there to do check in). And it is not lit up at night, apparently because of terrorist risk. PS - do not miss the 'baby Taj'. It was built before the Taj Mahal, and has the great advantage of being very peaceful., as so few people seem to go. All in all a wonderful experience.

We decided to spend my 40th birthday at the Taj Mahal and splurge on the Amarvilas. The hotel is everything you expect for the price and luxury. The hotel is beautiful and the rooms are great. The views are spectacular (but no view at night since the Taj is not illuminated) No need to repeat everything that has been said before. Our only regret is that we did not spend an extra night here to enjoy the beautiful view and pool. Be sure to visit Itmadullah’s Tomb the “baby Taj Mahal” when you are in Agra, it’s beautiful and there are almost no tourists. If you like staying at fancy hotels and can afford it you won’t regret staying here.

On return I do feel guilty about how much I spent per night at the Oberoi. Our rooms with breakfast cost EUR1,000 a night whilst just outside the hotel gates the 'untouchables' are grawling on their hands and knees for food. Our taxi driver (not employed by the hotel) is paid EUR27 a month. It does make you think and its compounded by the fact that the hotel collects donations from guests by placing envelopes in their rooms to save the street bears being exploited. What about the humans? I'm used to travel and have been to india many times but it still hit me.

Its a lovely hotel with the most fantastic view. It's probably worth pointing out that although only 600 metres away the Taj is not illuminated at night so from your balcony once it gets dark you cannot see anything.

Each night the hotel puts on a dance on a platform opposite the hotel rooms. It starts about 30 mins before sunset until 30 mins after. If you want to celebrate then this is the time to do it. Order room service before the sun goes down and have a table set on the balcony so you can enjoy the view of the Taj. A half bottle of bog standard NV Moet from the mini bar will set you back EUR60 so I suggest you consider purchasing a full bottle of Krug from the duty free on arrival in Delhi airport. It adds to that romantic sundowner on the balcony.

Rooms are a decent size Room service menu is very limited. We didn't suffer any tummy upsets but we were told to avoid anything like cucumber, raddishes or salad.

I used the Gym each day (no view) and its poor compared to other hotels I have stayed in.

I have a good salary, I'm widely travelled, I enjoy staying at top hotels. If there was no view of the Taj from this hotel then on its own merits I'd give the Oberoi Amarvilas a 6/10

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Taj Mahal is extraordinary as much for what it is as how it has escaped the banality of cliché. For 350 years, this monument evokes a sense of wonder. Only by being there can you witness its true majesty, its symmetry, its setting and the delicacy of its carved marble inlaid with precious stones. Now just suppose you were to overlook it from your hotel room? The Oberoi Amarvilas is 600 metres from this tribute to love. The lavish interiors and elaborate gardens add to the serenity of the scene. The guestrooms are palatial: all have magical views and are luxuriously furnished with traditional fabrics, white marble, hand-crafted ornaments and every modern amenity. There is a luxury spa offering a range of therapies, a swimming pool where snacks and drinks are served; an ornamented ballroom and fine restaurants to suit the international palate. But the lobby lounge is a feast for the eye designed, as it was, around that glorious view of the Taj Mahal. ... more   less
