“Great hotel, walking distance from the Taj Mahal”
Reviewed February 27, 2013

Arrived late at night and staff helpful despite my grumpiness. Modern luxury hotel as good as you'll get anywhere. Place is squeaky clean , Food was good, and at 4000INR B and B it was worth it.
If you stay here, get up early , walk to Taj east gate then turn left and follow the road a few hindered metres to get to South Gate and ticket office. After the Taj visit, walk back to hotel, chill in the room or by pool until 3:30 then take a TucTuc to Red Fort, (100INR) and visit there as the sun sets.....great colour for pictures.
If you need travel plans I'd recommend their travel agent Agit Agrewal from Taj Travels. He was excellent at booking further travel arrangements, efficient, reasonable prices and a pleasant man too.

Room Tip: Pick first or second floor with a lower number is better. Some rooms like 120 or 220 might be noisy...

This hotel did not seem authentic at all and clearly geared towards tourists. The food was overpriced. The staff was helpful and friendly, but the WIFI was poor quality and the power went out very inconveniently. Our room seemed clean, but smelled STRONGLY of sewage. I know Agra is a pungent city, but our room had it real bad. The staff also never had change and was unable to accommodate credit card for late checkout, etc. They made us pay cash for our hotel charges, which was very inconvenient. I'd be charged like 150 rupees for something and I'd offer to pay credit card and they wouldn't accept that, then I'd give them a 1000 rupee note, and they'd look at me like I was crazy and ask me to pay with change. All in all, I can say that I was fairly comprehensively disappointed with my stay at The Retreat.

This is a fairly functional place, a stop-over it felt for large groups visiting the Taj Mahal.

The food is uninspiring for such a North Indiian Mughal centre.

Having previously established that I could pay by credit card, neither of their machines actually worked at check-out, and they sent me off to find and ATM.

Hardly the 'luxury hotel' it claims to be.

Our tour agency had initially arranged for us to stay at Hotel Taj Resorts but after reading reviews on tripadvisor, I specifically requested to put up at The Retreat instead. We were thankful we made that decision. The hotel was modern, clean and in close proximity to Taj Mahal. I love that the room had nice warm wooden flooring, great showering facilities with hot and cold water as you want it (not to be taken for granted in India), and free wifi for 6 hours which was good enough since few hotels offer wifi for free. Breakfast was mediocre but definitely on par with other luxury boutique hotels. For that record, none of the hotel breakfasts in our two-week India journey met our expectations.

The only major disappointment was the long waiting time whenever we needed anything delivered to our room. We always had to wait for at least 20 to 40 minutes before someone came knocking on the door to send us things like hair dryer, laundry bags and wifi password.

Oh, and another thing, the professional photos on their website can be rather misleading. Don't get me wrong though, the photos are definitely an accurate representation of the actual outlook of the building and rooms but not its surroundings. We had an awful view from our superior room as there were major constructions going on right beside the hotel. Thankfully, there weren't any disturbing noises.

The problem of this hotel is that the wifi is working only in the lobby. Our room needs to be painted and there was no hot water in the evening. On the other hand, the restaurant was really good both for dinner and breakfast.

Like most, we stayed at The Retreat for one night, to allow us to visit the Taj Mahal early in the morning.

The hotel is set in what looked to be a fairly run-down area of Agra (though that could be true of anywhere in Agra!), but is close to the Taj Mahal.

We arrived very late at night, but check-in was quick (always a plus point as anyone who's stayed in India will know!) and we were up in our room in no time.

The room was fresh, and clean and we slept well in what was left of the night. Breakfast was your standard affair – mix of Indian and international on offer.

We’d contacted the hotel ahead of our visited to arrange transport, and happily arranged through their in-house travel desk, which is operated by another company. They offered good service, but got the feeling we weren't getting value for money on this.

Checkout was also quick & easy, especially as we’d pre-paid. Overall, happy with our stay and would recommend to others staying in Agra for 1 or 2 nights

They gave us two adjacient rooms on the first floor for our family. The teenagers soon got onto the free wifi. The rooms are pretty standard hotel rooms, not too small. Everything worked and it was clean. The breakfast buffet had a good selection of Indian and English breakfast, and changed each day.

The Taj Mahal is walking distance and we spent an interesting morning walking through the narrow alleys of the old townbetween the hotel and the south gate.

The Retreat was perfectly ok for our family of four from New Zealand. There are some much more upmarket luxury hotels in Agra if your budget stretches to that. We'd have got better value using our Agra travel agent instead of me booking from New Zealand.
