“Why stay in an impersonal hotel when you can stay with a wonderful family for a lot less”
Reviewed October 24, 2012

On our first trip to India we carefully looked at the reviews on Tripadvisor before selecting the places we stayed in and we were not disappointed by our choices. The company we planned our trip with were reluctant to book N Homestay for us, especially as it was our first night in India, they were favouring tourist hotels like the Radison or Trident where large tour groups stay but we are grateful we stuck with our decision to stay at N Homestay as it was a great experience staying with Mrs Naghma Haider, who is a wonderful lady, and her family, the type of experience you do not get in large impersonal hotels.

This is not a 5 star hotel but the simple rooms were clean and comfortable with air conditioning, plenty of hot water. We had a great sleep the night we stayed there and the breakfast was really enjoyable. It is ideally located only 15-20 mins walk from the Taj Mahal

What makes a place like this are the people running it and Mrs Naghma Haider is no exception. She is a wonderful lady and lots of fun and we had a great talk with her. It was very enlightening and gave us a greater insight into the lives of the growing Indian middle class.

We can see why N Homestay is rated No.1 in the Bed & Breakfast category in Agra. Why would you want to stay in a large impersonal hotel when you can stay with a wonderful family for a lot less.

If you want great food then you must try the Dasa Prakash Restaurant which is 5 minutes walk away. This is part of a small chain which serves authentic South Indian Vegetarian food.

And if you need a good guide then contact S M Solanki (sukh_68@yahoo.com) – his English is excellent and was the best guide we used in India.

Agra is unfortunately not the nicest city to visit. The heat, dirt and dust is physically draining and the constant stream of touts and people out to rip you off is mentally draining - but that's why a place like this is great to come back to.

Shiron and his mum are great hosts. The way they talk with you really does make you feel like you're in a family home as opposed to a hotel or guest house. They will look out for you and make sure you're not getting ripped off, and are always very pleasant to talk to - whilst respecting your privacy at the same time. If you want to organise a driver make sure you run it by them first, or you might spend your whole day making unscheduled shopping shops! The price they quote you is also the price you pay - no hidden "taxes" or "fees".

Rooms are basic but spacious, comfortable and very clean - and great value for 1500 rupees. Air conditioning is a must in Agra and it works very well. If the power cuts out, everything but the A/C and hot water continues to work (there's a ceiling fan so you won't bake to death). I had a couple of power outages while I stayed but they didn't last very long. The A/C initially seems to be in a bit of an odd position where it points directly at the bed, but I found that you can adjust the louvres to point upwards so you're not getting freezing cold air blowing on you while you sleep.

There are are a few good restaurants very close by (easy 10 minute walk) which your hosts will be happy to recommend. They may seem a little expensive by Indian standards but the food in all of them was very good and was well worth it. Shah Continental was good - despite the name, they had some of the nicest Tandoori Chicken I had in India. Dasaprakash also had great South Indian and was quite cheap. The food they prepare at the guest house is excellent - try the Indian breakfast! I just regret not joining them for dinner, which apparently you can do if you let them know in advance :)

Definitely a great place. This is the second time I stayed there and I highly recommend. Walk to Taj Mahal takes only 15 minutes ! :) The owners are friendly and very helpful. Man really feels there like at a second home in India! Rooms clean and tidy. Clean bathroom with hot water. And a big breakfast;) If you're going to Agra, spend the night right here. :)

Starting with the pickup, everything at this place was helpful, professional, and friendly. The driver was ready with his sign even though our train was delayed an hour. After settling in, Shiron gave us a great overview of the surrounding areas, restaurants, when to go different places, and how to avoid people taking advantage of you. The room was totally clean, wifi was blazing fast, breakfast (Indian and continental) was delicious. The homestay itself is set in a residential area MUCH more peaceful than the city of Agra, though only 2 blocks away. We could walk to and from the Taj Mahal easily, and the nearby tuk tuk drivers had no problems taking us around for the prices Shiron suggested. Even charged us 2/3 days tarriff for our 10pm check out after i made it clear i wouldnt mind paying a full day. Really a lovely place and absolutely deserving of its reputation.
