Stayed one night in room 406. Room was comfortable enough and located on the highest accommodation floor, which is good because it has close access to the swimming pool and rooftop restaurant. Walking the hallway to the room, there was definitely a dampness smell/feel about it, as if there was a major water leak at some time that was never quite resolved.

The staff were friendly and courteous, but it felt like we were just livestock in the tourist processing facility. The hotel is in walking distance to the Taj Mahal and the ticket centre which is a real bonus.

Internet is very average (0.3Mbs at best) and the roof top dining, although nice location our experience was disappointing. In winter it is cool up top and although the food comes out hot (except for the rice - cold) it is served on cold plates and within ten minutes the food is cold. Indian curries were average.

If you just want a place to do the Taj Mahal and want typical western three star hotel accommodation, than this will suffice.

Big and impersonal, the short walk to the east gate of the Taj Mahal, is this hotel's best feature. Our subterranean room was clean and wonderfully quiet, although in the vehicle-restricted zone around the Taj traffic noise in the upper levels would be minimal. The restaurant is geared toward international tourists, which is to say bland and ordinary. The hotel staff were helpful in securing tickets to the Taj, and in arranging a car and driver to our next destination.

The hotel is very close to one of the Taj Mahal entrances (few minutes walk, and is conveniently situated across one of the ticket boots). The rooms were clean and nicely decorated with the exception that some maintenance works, especially in the bathrooms would be required (reason for not giving a 5 to this hotel). Overall service was great. In general, I would recommend this hotel and would stay again.

The location is amazing, walking distance to the east entrance of Taj Mahal, probably your main reason to be in Agra. Despite the spacious room and decent bathroom, the hotel is not luxury. The facilities are a little bit old dated and the staff were not very helpful: it was complicated for them explain me how the tickets and entrances for Tak Mahal worked... The roof top restaurant has a good (not great) view, but the food is only average and takes a long time to arrive. After all, it was a decent one night stay.

I stayed at the hotel for one night in late November 2013. The pickup at the train station went off as planned, although they didn't answer several emails requesting confirmation. I had to call from Delhi to make sure that everything was set.

To get to the Taj Mahal you need to first make a left (going away from the Taj) for 100 meters to get your tickets, foot covers and water, then go back about 1/2 mile or so to the Taj entrance. You will get about 1,000 offers of a ride from the bike rickshaws (motorized vehicles aren't allowed close to the Taj). It is also an easy walk if you wish to do it.

While being within walking distance to the Taj Mahal is a real plus I wouldn't make it the sole criteria for selecting a hotel. There are so many tuk-tuks and bike rickshaws in Agra that you can easily get to the Taj for about 150 Rupees (probably less) from just about anywhere.

The room was big and clean, the bathroom worked fine. I didn't eat dinner at the rooftop restaurant but had drinks there. Yes, you can see the dome of the Taj Mahal off in the distance, looking over the rooftop restaurant of another hotel. Breakfast was not memorable one way or another. There are some small restaurants and shops outside the hotel

The bottom line is that the Hotel Taj didn't ruin my visit to Agra. You aren't going there for the hotel experience of a lifetime. If I went back there I would probably try somewhere else just for a change but if I would up back at the Hotel Taj I would be fine with it.

I've never written on TripAdvisor before but stayed here on the basis of good reviews. We got a basement room with no window, bathroom smelt of urine which got stronger through the night, staff in the restaurant were very slow, they are illegally selling alcohol (admitted they had no licence so couldn't give a receipt) my friend got food poisoning from the fish curry. Dreadful.

A short walk from the Taj Mahal. We booked direct and knew in advance we had paid a reduced price for a budget 'basement' room.It was better than expected. Semi basement and we had a window. It was clean and comfortable. We might have been a bit disappointed if an agent had booked this room as part of a price inclusive tour ,but it was us who kept the saving -not the agent.
The roof restaurant was quite good. There is still a Taj mahal view but you have to look through the roof restaurant of an adjacent hotel.

Room Tip: Some budget rooms are in semi basement and may have restricted light. Confirm in advance what you or...
