We stopped to have a quick lunch at The Gateway Hotel in Agra and went to the coffee shop (its called GAD now). We were roaming all day and hence didn't want to stuff ourselves. Had a paneer dish and some rotis/naan to go with it. The food was very good as you would expect but what made this a memorable experience was the service.
The staff at the restaurant were not the usual bright-eyed 20-something that you find in most hotels. They seemed to be from the colonial days - men in their mid 40s and 50s but their manner and their service was simply superb! They were helpful without being over-enthusiastic, they were responsive without being noticed and they were friendly without trying to impress. We were there for only 30 minutes but they managed to make it a memorable experience that we will remember.
Hats off to the staff at The Gateway Hotel for getting it right by sticking to the basics.
