Clearly a backpacker favorite but did the job. Food was good and staff nice. Adjacent to the South gate of the taj. The thali was good as was the dal.

“Great food, beautiful rooftop, amazing hospitalitity -- plus wifi!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 19, 2012 via mobile

Went here for breakfast and lunch and loved both. They serve food on rooftop and it is very beautiful and peaceful. Very nice people, and good food. Had some very good curries.
Besides the food, they are very hospitable. They are the only restaurant I've seen in india that offers wifi, which is so helpful when in a foreign land for the day. Also, in their menu they have suggested prices for taxis around Agra, which was helpful. Lastly, they let us hang out as long as we wanted, and since we had a late train to catch, we were very very grateful. It was a nice break from walking around the city.

“Good Food, Good Atmosphere, Good Prices ... and No 'After-Effects' !!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 24, 2012

It was a long morning at the Taj Mahal and we needed food! Walking back to our hotel through a tourist area crowded with touts, small shops and restaurants, we didn't expect to find much but the Shankara Vegis Restaurant caught our eye due to a Travel Advisor decal on the door. In addition, there was roof-top dining. Win-win!

The manager (owner?) is an affable man who guided us through the menu on the first floor and then we began the climb to the roof (a typical Indian staircase, narrow with no hand rail).

The roof is covered to protect from the sun (much appreciated) and there are about 7 or 8 tables, seating 4 each, that were completely filled by the time we left. The atmosphere is laid-back with a good view of the Taj Mahal but the best thing was the food, which was delicious and extremely cheap (total came to about $6 for two and if you ordered the 'set' platter, it is even cheaper). We'd ordered non-spicey and what we got was perfect, including a special-ordered eggplant dish that wasn't on the menu.

Important for delicate Western stomachs: we suffered no 'after-effects'!
