Kluney Manor
Reviewed June 17, 2012

We had recently been to Ooty in April which is the peak season and the city was buzzing with too many tourists. The only place we really could relax and rewind was the hotel. I was glad we chose Kluney Manor, its a great property which is situated on a hill above the city and beautiful scenary all around. The place is well maintained and the staff was very helpful. We stayed at a Vintage suite and it had a very victorian look. I would recommend skipping the food in the restaurant as its not that great or worth it. And yes you do have to pay extra for firewood and the billiards table.

Room Tip: Try to get the cottages I think they are worth the money.

Rooms very good, view of Ooty was fantastic, absolutely wonderful gardens, amazing food.

But service was very slow (took about 30 minutes to serve our family gathering of 10 people)

I would visit it the next time I go there.

Room Tip: The Rustic cottage offer you the best view

Highly recommended for any family/friends/couples. Easily reachable from the railway station and the bus station within minutes. Taxis should charge within Rs.50-75. Unless one would want to stay at a homestay, this premises should be one of the best choices.

An old all-wooden setup reminds of 19th century grandeur. Ceilings, floors and all the furniture wooden. Neatly maintained (spatial) and green garden carpets the front of the building. Cool weather and space available, together makes you feel stuck with the surroundings and not get our for any sort of sight-seeing.

You are seldom disturbed (except if you are near to the kitchen) by the external activities. Rooms are spacy and well ventilated. Choose a Vintage Suite if one's available.

Food is nothing too exotic, but very sumptuous. Liked the not-so-varied items. One can enjoy the spa services.

A little expensive, but worth the stay.

Room Tip: Vintage Suites are worth the money.

Rikshaw will charge you 70 rupees (fix charges :) ) if you dont have car.
Very good room service.
Food (dinner/breakfast) quiality was good. once u ordered food, you will get it in 15-20 mins.
Specious and warm rooms. Hot water available. only problem is that you have to wait for 10-15 mins after one persons bath over.
Overall very good restorant.

Our group pretty much had the whole hotel to ourselves for three days as we were a very large group. So, my take on this hotel is definitely biased. The staff were attentive, but service was slow. Food was average, our breakfast was included as part of the package. Coffee and Tea weren't the greatest - for being located in the Nilgiris, I found this very strange.
The gardens were something else - extremely well maintained! The youngsters in the group found the lawns a great place to play.
I might consider staying again at Kluney, although it may not be at the top of my list.

We stayed here for one night during our stay in Ooty. I think we were in Ooty during peak local tourist season (or perhaps it is always this busy in Ooty on weekends?) as it was very difficult getting a hotel room for more than one night.

The gardens were beautiful and very well maintained, and the whole place had a very old English atmosphere to it. The room had a fireplace, a four poster bed and huge draping curtains.
The bathroom was old, and clean enough - although there were a few dead beetles on the floor when we got there. The room itself was cold, as the only source of heating is the fireplace. We were there at the end of spring/beginning of summer so I can't imagine what it is like in the winter time. The fireplace cost around $3AUD to light and burned furiously for about 1 hour then died out. We had an extra bed put in for a friend, which had a thin mattress and metal frame and she had to pull out some blankets she had bought as souvenirs to keep her warm at night.

Breakfast was included - you use a tray with dividers to put your food on, which was reminiscent of boarding school or a school canteen. We were the first to arrive for breakfast, and we were initially unsure of where to go or what to do, as the hall with the food in it was very dark and had all the lights off, and no one came to give us instructions (I'm not sure why they kept the lights off in the hall for so long, even after more people arrived for breakfast)

They had the usual Indian breakfast food, which was average, and also some chinese/indian style noodles - again, average. The tea was not that great.

To get to the main area of Ooty, we had to walk down the hill for about 5-10 mins to an area with more traffic to find an auto. You probably don't want to be doing this if you are alone at night.

Overall, a bit pricey for what it was. If we go back to Ooty, we would probably try another hotel. And it is more than likely very cold in winter, so if you're going to stay here, bring your thermals to sleep in

The property is beautiful with lots of flowers, clean and mowed lawns and the best part if every room gets its piece of greenery to sit on and for kids to play and run around on. There is no view, except from the main portico, rest of the property is fenced and covered with ferns to provide the exclusivity.

The dining hall is big and a bit dark, you can sit on the glass walled outer portion of the hall. The food is good quality and quantity, but the taste is the same for most dishes. Try their "aloo jeera". Order 30 mins prior or be prepared to wait, which is good, the food comes in freshly cooked.

We had rooms Queen & Duchess (suites) for the 1st day. The rooms are like banquet halls with a high bed stand in the middle of the room. Some would find this uncomfortable, as we are used to cozier rooms in hotels. if you are travelling with family (4 adults + 1 kid) you should opt for the rooms Prince and Princess which are joined inside so that it actually feels like 1 cottage with 2 rooms, there is a lawn in front, good sitting area. These are rooms are preferable.

Staff and service is prompt, not overtly friendly and no plastic smiles, but they are available to help you out and make your stay comfortable.

Overall good place to stay in Ooty with family. And if you want to feel like a bit of British Raj, you might want to spend a night in their suites.

Room Tip: Go for Prince/Princess and the ones in that block (behind the reception block) if you want a pleasan...
