“Great place to stay in Ooty”
Reviewed May 8, 2009

Wonderful resort experience! This in essence sums up by stay in this resort for two nights.
The resort is located on strawberry hill, Havelock road. Approaching Ooty from Mysore road, took a left before Charing Cross at the big lamppost circle. There are many resorts on this hill like willow hill, Howard Johnson etc. At the gate there is a blue insignia of the resort.
The first look of the resort gives the impression of a Victorian era home. There are many photos/sketches in the resort which depict the history of the place. Read them at leisure.
There is a fireplace in the drawing room and in every room. The rooms are named after Shakespeare’s works [Othello, Hamlet etc]. The flooring is fully wooden. Lot of good quality wood has been used in the room. Rooms are well maintained and service is good.
The resort is very well maintained. They maintain a green lawn and also beautiful flowers outside the rooms. Saw the same flowers in the Ooty botanical gardens. From the lawn one can get a very good view of the town below.
The dining rooms are neat and the service is good. They also have a candle lit glass house dinner space in the night.
Dinner is A-la-carte while breakfast is a buffet spread. Both were satisfying.
The surprise package was the live music band, by two young boys, played every evening during dinner time. This was a very unique and wonderful experience. They play some very good English songs.
The resort runs a taxi service offering full day/ half day Ooty tour packages. The cab driver that I went with was a very nice man. A half day tour costs 800 bucks. They also will wash/clean your car on request.
Their senior staff came every evening checking our well being and distributed mint chocolates!
The only major hitch I had was that I had to pay 500 bucks extra per night for my 7 yr old child. The package price was for 2 adults only. This was not communicated earlier when the package was sold to me. Other irritants I experienced was that the room service refused to serve bed tea due to non-availability of milk and that the doors to the bathrooms were of low height.
Apart from these the family did not have anything to complain about.
Overall good value for money. I would recommend this place instead of any hotel in the center of the Ooty.

Last year I had this weekend trip to Ooty, when I stayed at this hotel. After my visit, I can surely say that the hotel stay was best part of the Ooty trip because the city was crowded with tourists but this location is totally peaceful and relaxing.
This is a colonial bungalow with all modern facilities in each room, so that you continue to feel like king during your stay. I particularly enjoyed my drink on the rocks in front of my fireplace, while my friend enjoyed candle lit hot water bath tub with his favorite book. The food served to us was pretty good, but i feel it can be improved little bit more. The staff was very courteous and they arranged for horse ride in tea gardens.
Morning and Evening here is especially enchanting because of clouds filled in garden area. You can have sip of tea in this garden while looking at city in the valley filled with clouds.
I would recommend this to people who are looking for luxury and peace.

This is a tastefully restored bungalow set in well maintained grounds. Our room "Prospero" had twin beds, open fire, decent bathroom, but no comfortable chairs to sit by the fire. However, there was a roaring fire in the lounge when we wanted to sit there one evening. It does get cold at night, but the housekeeper fussed around us to keep us warm with fires and hot water bottles.........very kindhearted man.

We loved sitting on the lawn and the breakfast selection was good. The one downside was that, being so far out of town, you are rather at the mercy of their own drivers for trips and to leave. We walked downhill to see the sights and got taxis or rickshaws back, so knew the prices. When we wanted a car to get us to the bus to leave they charged double the taxi fare, saying the car had to go both ways. Also the previous day we had booked a car trip and at the last moment they tried to charge more than the agreed price. None of this was the drivers themselves, but rather the man in charge of them.

It's like a step back in time... I felt like I'd stepped into an English manor (mind you, I've never been to England). The gardens are beautiful, and the entryway leads into an amazing drawing room with a fireplace, plush easy chairs, chandelier, old art and photos of the property. My only complaint is that the room was cold at night, even with the fireplace going. You're fine when you're in bed though, because there are plenty of blankets! There is hot water in the shower.

The restaurant had amazing food, presentation and taste of a 5 star restaurant. You can dine ouside during the day on the lawns, under a canopy if you prefer. The indoor dining room is beautiful and has a fireplace. The included breakfast is delicious, served in a beautiful glass atrium area, with choices of continental and indian food. They have filtered, safe drinking water in your room. The staff was so wonderful, ready to assist your every need, if you if didn't yet realize you needed something! They have really mastered the art of hospitalitity.

As our family friend in Mumbai told us, "Book it blindly, I've been there." You can't go wrong with this very special place!

We attended a wedding here and really enjoyed staying here for one night. Lovely place, very collonial and charming. The staff are really helfpul and service excellent. The surrounding gardens are really beautiful. Stayed in Othello and found if comfortable. Loved the lit open fire for when we went to bed.

The wedding food here was excellent! Earl's secret restaurant is highly recommended!

Lovely period property with real character. Rooms were clean and cosy, especially the Windsor room with the four poster bed. The caretaker (who did look like he needed a good feed) laid the fire for us every evening and had hot water bottles ready for us when we retired for the night. The hotel restaurant and breakfast were both excellent. The staff/waiters were really attentive (too much sometimes!) and made it an enjoyable stay. The gardens are really well maintained and would have been lovely to relax in had it not rained! We travelled to Ooty via the toy steam train and although it was a long journey, the scenery and experience were fantastic and well worth it.

We found this place rather accidently. The caretaker man was extremely helpful making sure we are comfortable at all times. Although did appear a bit thin and worringly undernourished. It was a very cozy hotel, clean and we thought the food was very delicious. The biryani and the gulab jamun was especially very tasty.

Negative points were: Our next door inmates were a bunch of about 5-6 girls who were drunk and very loud and kept us up at night between 1-3am until we had to requested the manager to intervene. It took many phone calls before we could get the manager. Again it is a B&B arrangement and possibly cannot afford certain luxuries as in a big hotel. We felt badly abused by the drunk girls who did not know how to be polite but this was not the fault of the hotel or it's staff. However, we felt they should allow only couples to stay in such places rather than groups of people. Manager was efficient in that respect that he was able to shut them up.

Room was cold after the fire went off and the caretaker was kind enough to give us hotwater bottle the next night which kept us warm the whole night, so please do request.

We waited for an hour for the food the next night as we thought they were anxiously serving the hotel owner's guests and gave us a questionable excuse that the prawns had burnt and therefore had to be re-made.! Not sure how true that was!! The waiters looked confused and scared at times although very polite. Too many waiters for such a small area we thought.

Water problems and there was no hot water for 2 of the mornings. According to them, they ran out of deisel as usually the temperature went low etc etc... So the caretaker (thin one) came in each time to give a bucket of hot water!!!! The chauffer of the hired car was not treated well and had to have a shower in cold water. Again some excuses were given about the diesel etc.

The road leading upto the hotel needs repair as it was a bumpy ride from the gate to the hotel.

I would stay there again but will make sure I ask them if hot water etc is OK and that we will not wait for 1 hour the next time for food and also not tolerate if the chauffer is not treated well.
