“Great experience for train enthusiasts”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 12, 2014

I love trains, so on my first visit to Southern India taking the "Toy train" to Ooty was a must.

I had to book weeks in advance to get a confirmed seat, it's an early start from Mettupayalam, and it's not a very comfortable seat for a five hour journey (what do you expect for 80 rupees in second class?), but I enjoyed every minute.

From the sweet nectar of Indian railway tea at every stop, the regular stops to top up the water tank on the steam engine, through to the magnificent views across the valley as you climb, it is an experience you won't forget.

If you have any interest in trains, then this is the perfect way for you to get to Ooty. If you haven't, then you will probably still enjoy the views.

Key tips - book in advance (there are only a few First Class seats so they sell out quickly, and even Second Class can fill up days before departure. The train stops several times, so use the opportunity to get off for toilet stops, buy tea, take pictures, etc. Our trip used a diesel engine from Coonoor to Ooty, so for the full steam experience (and also for many of the best views) you need to get on board at Mettupalayam.

“fun trip with some nice views”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 12, 2014

We did not have a reservation. The day before we just walked to the counter to realise that everything was already booked and we got the last to spaces on the waiting list. The day of departure we had to be at the station 3 hours earlier. But finally we got a seat in the general class. We were squeezed into the train. It was not really comfortable, but cheap and we had window seat. The ride itself was really beautiful with nice views over tea and coffee plantations and the Nilgiris. We went down from Ooty to Mettupalayam. It was worth it and we would prefer it to a bus.

“An adventure!”

There was a sense of adventure travelling on this train. We travelled from Ooty to Coonor and were rewarded by fascinating views over hills and valleys.

“Can’t afford to miss this train”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 10, 2014

Can’t afford to miss this train. For us it was the best attraction in Ooty, it is an experience of lifetime. Must have trip in this train if possible a round trip. You can book toy train tickets on line on IRCTC. Try to have one full trip, i.e. form Ooty to Mettupalayam.

If you do not get the tickets for full journey, you may also do the part journey from Ooty to Coonoor (Most popular route). First class ticket is INR 120, Second Class ticket is INR 20 and you also have option of going for General Ticket (No reserve seat).

Both first & second call has got cabins, first class cabins are having bigger windows and in total 8 people can travel in it. For Second class cabins windows are small and 10 people can travel I it.

Railway Station Codes – Ooty (UAM), Coonoor (ONR) & Mettupalayam (MTP)
Book Tickets on - http://www.irctc.co.in/
