“A lovely vacation at Gem Park Hotel”
Reviewed February 7, 2009

My wife and I have recently visited this lovely hotel in last week of Jan 2009. I booked the Red Rose package (2N/3D) plus 1 night complimentary on room only basis through Nivalink. The package was good at a price of 13999/-. We arrived at Coimbatore Airport from Mumbai at 10am by Kingfisher flight where we were received by the Hotel Cab (separately arranged by me). The road to Ooty was good however uphill ghaat road have 14 hair pen turns making our journey up to 3 hrs by road.

We reached hotel around 1pm. We were served welcome drink which was good and refreshing. The reservation desk (Manju) was nice to talk to. On my request for a room on Top floors (from where view is amazing) she upgraded my deluxe room for a day to Opal Suite on 6th floor. We were obliged by the gesture. We were given food coupans as per our package to be used in restaurant during our stay. The reception lobby was big and interiors were nicely done. We checked in into our room. Suite was amazing with lovely view of the nilgiri hills and Hotel garden (where camp fire happens). Bathroom was luxurious too.

For lunch, we went to Todas Café where a lavish buffet is organized daily. Too many choices for food. I liked Mutton rogan josh. The hotel has arranged local sightseeing in the package which was well executed by the people at Travel Desk (Francis & Jerry). We went to Wax museum, Tea estate, Valley view, Rose Garden, Botanical Garden, Ooty Lake and Thread Garden. I personally recommend Rose Garden and Thread Garden to visit if you are in Ooty. We were back at the hotel around 4:30pm. The ambience of the hotel itself was so good that we decided to spend rest of the days in the hotel only enjoying a nice view, weather (which was pleasant in the day and colder in the night but not chilly) and good food. We were given complimentary DVD player in our room to watch movies from Hotel’s DVD collection. The collection was not gr8 so I would suggest to bring your own dvds. We also tried Chinese cuisine at popular Jade Garden restaurant which was not upto the mark because their head chef was on leave and Asst chef was not that good. One lovely place was Valley Bar where excellent drinks were served by bartender (Manoj).

On checking out we were arranged the drop to Coimbatore by the Travel desk cab again. On checkout, we were told by Manju that since rooms were available they decided not to shift us from the suite and not billing us for the upgraded room. We were pleased by the gesture The stay was memorable because of very very cordial staff, excellent service and ambience. Overall I would recommend the hotel to be in if you are visiting Ooty on a vacation.

Had a Long wekend off. So decided to have a re unoin with old college mates.
Checked on the Holiday Inn Website and got an exellent package rate.
We checked in and there was this Car Rally group from Britian checking in at the same time.
Well we got the better of it they had done up this arrival experience with a group of horses and horsemen dressed as cowboys ready to welcome them.
It was amazing never seen it before.
Hotel overall was in a okay condition.
Rooms have a fabulous view try taking an upper floor room they have a better view.
Breakfast is extremely large king size.
Service is totally impeccable.
Overall worth stay will definatly go again

Stayed there for 2 nights with our 2 kids. Overall, a good experience save a few issues.

Here is a review:
Booked a month back through a travel agent and was recently refunded some amount (due to renovation / off season?)
The location is awesome, looking into the valley, giving almost a 180 degree view.
Has some nice lawns, a fire place in the lobby and a bon-fire pit near the pool.
Part of the lobby including the fireplace was under renovation, also one of the restaurants.
Heated, indoor swimming pool with a toddlers pool. Well maintained. But it is heated only on saturday (dont know if it is because of off-season ! but we were sorely disappointed as we were told that the heating is during weekends and we landed up on sunday morning !)
Rooms are a bit run down - door gets jammed. Commode does not work properly. And bathrooms are not child-friendly. No hand shower; and I dont know how many Indians are comfortable with a water-free style of toilet!
Food is ok but expensive; room service is prompt
Has an outdoor play area for kids and an indoor one (which is not very well maintained); outdoor one is good with some nice equipments and a good view.
Major negative point - electrical points are faulty even in the room probably because of renovation; Little scary and there were wires running /exposed in many places.
Very courteous and friendly staff. But cant say 'efficient'! Most of them seemed to be unaware of hotel rules.

Still, would recommend for families with kids.

Cheers,
Sumathy

The Holiday Inn at Ooty exceeded our expectations by far. The service was great considering the location and price. Stayed here during May 2008 and it was defintely value for money. From memory we paid $120 per night and it was better then some of the 5 star hotels where we have paid $400+ per night. The rooms were huge and we had lovely views of the valley. The room service and quality of food were also great. The only issue we had during our whole stay was that we couldn't stay for longer!

We just returned from our stay at this hotel last week. Overall it has been a bad experience.

I had booked in for the 3 days 2 night package inclusive of breakfast, lunch or dinner, half day sight seeing, 30 min massage and steam bath, fruit basket, cookies and choclates in the room and also surprise night amenities. I had gone in the peak season time and hence the hotel was totally booked.

Firstly, the property is very badly maintained. They have smelly rooms with non functional lights and toilets with no exhausts. Even the room key was not properly working and opened the door with lot of difficulty.

Secondly, the so called package is a BIG FARCE. I had to call them and remind of the package I had booked and they just shamelessly ignored my reminders. They provide nothing in the name of so called surprise amenites. The so called fruit basket, which came on the last day of my stay after my repeated calls, consisted of 2 bananas, 1 small pomegrenate, and a unripe mango. It was as if they had made a fun of us for reminding them of the package.

The half day sightseeing tour was again a forgettable experience. They gave a vehicle at 3:30 in the evening, when all sight seeing places in Ooty close down at 6 p.m. We had to skip the lake and had to rush through the other places.

The food was just ok, though the service was again awfully bad. The staff treat you real bad and you are made to feel unwanted. They have lot of so called "trainees", untrained local guys who know nothing in terms of service. Even the managers of "Toda Cafe" their main restraunt, spoke very arrogantly and gave really poor, if any service.

Overall, it has been a truly negative experience. Request all to avoid this hotel as there are other good hotels in Ooty.

On entering the foyer the initial impression is good, spacious, nicely furnished with a very appealing patisserie and chocolate shop. The bar, Chinese restaurant and main restaurant are also well presented. However, the passage to our room had bare unpainted walls and chanels cut into them for wiring ; however, no work was going on and appeared not to have been happening for a while. Our room was clean and comfortable although there was a drop down into the sitting area that could cause a fall. The electrics in the room were very dodgy and I had to get the hotel electrician to restore light on the second morning of our stay. I found the choice of food, particularly western dishes limited and the Indian dishes all seemed quite spicey. The indoor pool was being refurbished and again there was no sign of recent work. The hotel needsto sort out it's maintenance programme and widen it's menus.
