“The best and only place I would choose in Ooty for my Stay”
Reviewed February 22, 2011

Ooty is one of the most popular tourist destinations in South India. Although I have traveled to this hill station many times, this was my first stay at The Savoy.
As a tourist destination, Ooty is always crowded and has narrow and steep roads. However the moment you enter the hotel property, you are immediately transported to a very Private/ Cozy and beautiful environment away from all the noise and hustle.

Hotel: The Hotel is over 150 years Old with an English Charm to it.

Staff: The moment we reached, we had a warm welcome at the Reception. Throughout the stay they were very Courteous and helpful.

Room: We had taken a Superior Garden view Room which was Clean, Tidy and organized.

Food: The Buffet breakfast was very good with nice variety of food. We chose In-room dining throughout the Stay. The Food was Excellent and was always served promptly.

Spa: The Massage Center at the Hotel was a disappointment. Even though the Masseuse was experienced, the Ambiance and Neatness of the place was a complete disaster.

Places to Visit: There are many serene locations to visit in and around Ooty. The best way to explore ooty is to buy a Local Map and zero in on the locations that you would like to cover.

Main Attractions :
Botanical Garden / Rose Garden/ Ooty Lake ( not one of the cleanest )/ Pykara Lake ( a lake in the middle of the woods with clean blue Water )/ Toy Train Ride from Ooty to Coonoor ( approximately 2-4 hours )

Restaurants in Ooty : There are not many great restaurants in Ooty to try out any variety cuisines. The best food served for us was at the Savoy.

Languages Spoken: Tamil/ English

Shopping: The Ooty Home Made Chocolates and Ooty Varkeys are a go getter. The places to do shopping are near the Botanical Garden and at Commercial Street.

Expenditure
Avg room rate for superior room – Rs.4000 per night (Bed and Breakfast)
Avg price of snacks/ main course – Rs. 250-500/-
Avg Bar Menu – Rs. 100-400

Review Score ( 10 being Max )
Location: 8 (best in Ooty)
Rooms: 7
Cleanliness: 8
Staff: 9
Food: 8 (do try their Fish and Chips and tenderloin Steak with Pepper Sauce)
Bar: 7
Service Time: 9
Spa: 4 (Ambiance and Neatness was disappointing)

The Savoy is a 1920's converted school in its own grounds brisk walk away from town. The bungalow style rooms have log fires that staff will light if you request, it gets chilly at night there due to the altitude. rooms are reasonably furnished if a little tired. Good range of toiletries in the room. there is a massage centre at the hotel which we tried and was very expensive much cheaper deals to be had in places like thekkady. dining room is quite formal, service is good as is the food. There is a lawned area where you can sit and have drinks etc, lovely peaceful setting enjoyed our 2 day stay.

We stayed in the middle of November and were very lucky to get nice sunny weather and yet the chill of winter. We stayed in the one of the 1920's chalets and loved the room. The fireplace in the room was lit every night. The sprawling lawns were well maintained, you can cycle around, ride a pony... its a nice comfortable place to spend with family. we spent time playing badminton, touring Ooty and the hotel also arranged for the toy train tickets. The best thing i like about Taj is the service and it wasn't different here as well. the breakfast buffets are great and the Dosa i had here was one of the best ever...! Lunch and dinner was ok, nothing great to write about although we felt the portions were a smaller than what is usually served in other Taj's . In summary, a very nice stay of 3 nights and a stay we will remember for a long time.

savoy hotel is under the taj gateway hotels. a very romantic location in the colonical ambiance.rooms are not modern,as it is built at differnt periods from 1829 onwards, but has modern toilets and fittings. rooms in the main building are large suite rooms. restaurant and bar are elegant and will take you back to 19th century ambiance.

it is great place if you love to be in a true english sarroundings of 19th century.

The Savoy Ooty, is a heritage building - most parts are not very significant architecturally, but has a certain old world charm. The dining room takes you back in time. The service is very good.
The rooms are adequate without being fantastic. No views from the rooms of any significance. In the winter the hotel will provide a fireplace which is great.
All in all an adequate hotel, with the traditional Taj service, but not a luxury holiday resort.
