“Amazing and thrilling holiday”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 17, 2014

I had gone there to celebrate a quite New year mixed with an extended week long chilling and the atmosphere and the ambiance were worth every moment.

I had plans to just relax, read books and catch up with family but it turned out to be an excellent adventure for me. The treks organised by them are amazing. In the 5 days i stayed i managed to go for 3 and in the end i wished to stay longer just so as to be able to go for many more. Mr Prikshit Sharma, manager holiday activities is an enthusiastic trekker,he can simply motivate you to just keep going on which in return helps u see spectacular views thanks to the heights and never imagined beauty of Ooty.. The best trek i would recommend is to the Hanuman caves and preferably beyond, even though each trek is in self an amazing and different experience but for those who have the stamina and love walking try going up to the top, its completely worth it. The calmness, the beauty and the views are to die for.Cairn hill and the Lovedale trek were my other amazing treks, exploring nature, seeing the train come on the tracks, walking on the tracks, walking through the jungles, the natural trails, walking on the cross over harnessed bridge all are amazing experiences which i shall cherish throughout..

The people at the food and beverages counter especially Mr Manohar were excellent. The spread for the breakfast, lunch and dinner were amazing. There was something for everyone there ranging from north indian, south indian, continental and chinese. The menu was well planned and thought of. The deserts were also of a varied range which were amazingly mouth watering.

The housekeeping staff also are very kind and sweet, Ms Punitha who was handling our rooms was always with a smiling face, forever ready to help. The various designs on display with the towels was an amazing sight to look at everyday.

The organised tours are also a must try, they have really been planned out well. The must visit place on any persons travel itinerary has to be Pykara. its a place with a lot of scenic spots especially the 6t mile, 9th mile and the falls.

The only bad thing abt tht place is the non existence of a gym, swimming pool and a wi fi connection.

But all in all i had the most amazing and awesome experience ever. Thank u Fern hill staff for making this one a memorable stay for all of us.

Great location, ambience and service, and a very fast responding staff team. Wonderful buffet breakfasts and dinners serving a mix of South Indian, Punjabi, and continental food - to satisfy tastes of all age groups in a large family. Our kids enjoyed their indoor playing arena, particularly chess and carrom. My wife liked their (on-going) initiatives to use solar energy. More landscaping work is on way. Making WiFi available throughout the campus instead of just reception is strongly suggested. The reception power-plug points need to be brought in working order.
The sunrise and sunset are both lovely - don't miss! The nearest approach by flight is via Coimbatore (about 3 hours drive) - so any future travellers arriving late in the evening - do plan accordingly!

Room Tip: Accept holiday cottages, other rooms have good view and ambience. Improvements are also underway.

We had a chance to visit this property on our visit to Ooty. We had taken one room and it was quite large to accomodate 4 guests. Food is decent and location is great. Try and get the new rennovated rooms.

Room Tip: Choose new rennovated rooms.

Beautiful Hill top resort. Wide open, enough space to stroll around within the resort compound. Option of Cottage rooms or Hotel rooms. Level difference within the resort makes it interesting stay in a nicely laid out gardens and lawn.
Food is good with ample choice. Service is cordial. Rooms are specious with adequate furniture. Cleanliness is just up to the mark. View all around is very pleasing. Battery operated car is available to move within the resort for those who have problems climbing up hill.
Overall it is a nice holiday resort. We stayed there for a week as RCI guest. Ample scope to travel around. Lakes, forests and trekking opportunities for the nature enthusiasts. Both Sun rise and Sun set can be enjoyed on clear days..

Room Tip: Cottage rooms on first floor are best

We stayed at Ooty Fern Hill from 28th Dec to Jan 4th 2013. Stay was ok. Resort is placed in a good location overlooking the valley, folks are friendly but the resort management needs to seriously look at all the service departments (restaurant, travel desk, housekeeping, etc) and ensure they have their act together. I was travelling with a senior citizen, 2 kids aged 2 and 7, would not rate the place too good from an overall customer service experience

Day 1. Reached hotel. Even after previous confirmations etc, room was not ready.
Bad - Had to wait an hour for room to be ready. Even after room was ready - not cleant. Room had a smell. No linens. Toilet paper.Travel desk had no map to help us plan some itenary.
Good - View was great. Complementary tea/ coffee and french fries for kids. Heater was provided

Day 2 onwards - It was a constant challenge to call up house keeping to ensure linens, toilet paper etc were available. TV reception was bad. Housekeeping mentioned we would have to live with the reception. With kids you need some TV - but that went down the drain. Reception kept improving sometimes - but mostly it was grainy.

Day 3 - Walk from our room to the main club house was steep. It was real tough for senior citizen to walk all the way. There is a golf cart but the service is just pathetic. Even after requesting for the golf cart - either the driver was not there or there was always some excuse and the senior citizen had to almost have a "Stress test" climbing the hill. My advise - if you have senior citizen and are ok with not having the view - take a room in the main club house and save yourself the hike stress test.

Day 4 - 31st night. We are RCI members and were few of the people staying in the resort for more than 6 days. All others come in 1-2 days tours. On the gala night, we were promised seats in the front and given seats all the way back. With 2 kids who really wanted to enjoy the dance floor - we requested for a change. Finally, after a lot of persuation - the staff gave a seat somewhere in the middle.
Good- The New Year's program were good - kids loved and danced all the way to the eve.
Bad - For the main course - one had to walk all the way out of the banquet into the club house in the freezing cold. It would be good if they can create an inside walkway from banquet room to the club house.

Day 5- Same struggle with linens, toliet paper etc. To add - left over food from New Year's eve was also mixed in the next day's food buffet line-up.

Activity Center: My kids aged 7 and 2.5 really wanted to do some activities but there seemed to be no one interested. Also - there were activity schedules mentioned on a board but no activities were done. From a parent's perspective, kids need time off from parents and parents want to enjoy too - that is the whole purpose of vacation. Activity center should be the strongest place in a resort - from where kids should not want to come out. In this one - kids just did not feel like going - except for the ice hockey game. There is a open play area in the back. My kids went there for some time.

Travel Desk - We were few of the people staying for 6-7 days. They could really have chalked out a nice program, but no maps, no tours, not helpful information (something that I would expect from a local resort person who is aware of the roads, surroundings, someone to explain things that can/ or cannot be done with kids/ seniors etc.). As part of the hospitality industry, the effort from the people on the resort should be very friendly and helpful - ALWAYS !!!

There were definitely some helpful people around - but cannot be said for the resort as a whole.

Well - enough said about resort - they have lots of group tours from Kesari and likes coming in groups so it seems the staff is really overwhelmed with the amount of people to manage all the incoming and in/ out movement. Management really needs to go to the basics and look at each areas and improve.

Bottomline - I am definitely not going back to that resort/ or would definitely not recommend to someone who is used to Mahindra/ other global standard resorts with kids. Maybe an ok place for people that travel in a large group and just use the place as a stay for 1-2 nights.

The location of the resort is very beautiful all around the resort, you can view mountains and valley's from most of the room's or from their garden lawns, this resort used to get cloudy in the evening with light and some times dense fog with chilling cold during our stay in December [winter season] the resort is some 5 km away from the main city of ooty, the resort property is very big and has many different types of accommodations, like standard rooms, studio rooms, 1 bedroom aprtm, and 2 BR aprtm, most of the rooms have beautiful views specially 1 BR aprtm cottages which have personal sit out place and lush green garden connected all around the cottages with beautiful valley view, here you can enjoy your morning tea in sun while the weather is chilly in winters, the resort has their travel section which is quite reasonable for your travel to city or for site visits to various different places, you can also hire auto's from near the resort gate which are just opposite to the main entrance, here you will also find one small shop from here you can buy small needs for your daily use, The welcome during our check in was quick with excellent welcome drink, and the staff was very courteous to accommodate you in the best of your requirement, here in the lobby they have PRO'S [public relation] for to look after the guests comfort during their stay, here we met MS RAJKUMARI who would always welcome us with big smile when ever we went to the lobby, this highlights the courteousness of the staff towards their guests, At the restaurant you are always given smile ling welcome, here we met DHAYA and MR KARTHICK both would like to fulfill your request on priority and see that your request is handled carefully, even the other staff in the restaurant are very helpful and courteous towards all the guests, the food quality and taste was very good, the rates are also reasonable compare to the resort standard, here you can enjoy their buffet meals at discounted rates with vast different variety of foods and deserts, As we were there for new year they had planned big cocktail party with dance and music with very big buffet spread of which we enjoyed very much, The house keeping staff also does commanding job, here we met ms punita and mr suresh who would do our rooms neat and clean every day, and special mention for Mr NIYATA all rounder house keeping incharge, The area manager Mr Dilawar Singh was very jolly person who would interact with us and ask about our comfortable stay, over all our stay at this resort was very fulfilling and enjoyed our vacation very much..

Room Tip: independent cottages are with excellent views
