St. Stephen's Church

As a small church with a smattering of inscriptions and dedications from Ooty's colonial past, the church makes a reasonable enough visit. It's well kept and has pretty sainted glass windows, but this Brit has seen too many churches to me wowed, so 3 stars is all it gets.

The Church is beautiful, with some excellent stained glass windows. There were many memorial stones in the church, were interesting to know or read the names of people remembered by friends and relatives.
The graveyard is also worth a visit. So many Europeans in the colonial age traveled so far and died so young.

St Stephen's Church is a hidden treasure. The stained glass windows, installed when the church ws built in the early 1800s still retain their jewel tones. The wood for the massive beams was supposedly brought from Tipu Sultan's palace in Srirangapatnam. Do not miss the spectacular cemetery- the poignant statements on the gravestones will touch your heart.

Seeing a church such as St Stephens in Ooty reminds you how important the British were to the development of this town up in the hills. The chuch is well maintained and the graveyard bears witness to the many British people who lived there and often died so young.
