Excellent location, Amazing property, helpful staff and wonderful hosts!!!
The only thing that can improve is food.
This is one of the only 2 options you have, if you wish stay in Avalanche/Emerald.
This part of nilgiris is very less explored and is at it's natural best. Early mornings are most beautiful.
Best place to stay if you wish to visit Emerald, Avalanche, Upper Bhavani, Porthimund, Mukurthi, Parson's valley.
Vijay, the host, is packed with information and can surely help you with treks or trips around.
Way to reach this place is horrible, but the pain fades away once you reach the place.
Dont forget to ask for a stay in tents, when the property is fully booked.

This property came highly recommended by more than one friend. The locale and setting did not disappoint at all - very quiet and refreshing. But it was a sub-par experience over all due to the way we were treated by the people running the place. I would not recommend this to anyone any more. The details of my experience form the rest of the review.

First a bit about the property - It is a homestay that has grown over the years into a more commercial operation. There is an old (but well maintained) classic Raj-era tea estate bungalow over a hundred years old, surrounded by more modern cottages and rooms that they have added as the homestay concept picked up. Vijay, the owner lives in the bungalow with his wife. They have two sons who both live abroad and visit during the holidays and help run the show when they are there. They were both around when we visited. They were pleasant to the face in general, especially Vijay's wife who was a sweetheart.

I spent 3 nights and almost four days around last new year's at this property along with my wife and her close friend - making us a couple and a single woman in the party. After looking at their website and exchanging notes with the manager we booked a cottage that was supposed to have two bedrooms and a common area - perfect for our small group. The first jolt we received was when my wife called the hotel to confirm if our driver would be given a suitable place to spend the nights. The person who answered (who we later learned was also the owner of the place) answered curtly that he could spend the night in the car. We were shocked, as the temperature in those parts was expected to touch 3C and it was not something we would do to our driver. We were certain we will cancel or plans if this was the case, and called back to tell him that we will cancel our booking if they would not provide at least a proper bed somewhere indoors, along with the hotel staff. After this he agreed for this and, to his credit, kept his word.

The next was the biggest shocker and this was soon after we "checked in" (which is not really a formal process. We were silently shown to a large room where a movable bed was laid out next to a more permanent looking large double bed. It became clear immediately that this is not what we had asked for and booked. When questioned, Vijay kept insisting that my wife had called him a few days before and the plan had changed - that we now only needed a single room for all three. It was the most ridiculous thing we had heard any property manager tell us. He stuck to that line, refusing to acknowledge that he could have made a mistake. It became extremely unpleasant. When we piled on the pressure on him to make good our booking, his son came up with the ingenous suggestion: "We'll put out a tent in the front lawn; and we'll knock off one night's rent." I was flabbergasted... just when I thought it could not get any worse.

There could be many reasons why they had to do what they did. But to first lie blatantly that we had called them to change the plan, and later to suggest we lay out in a tent "and get a night's rent off"... is just not done.

We did put pressure and finally they agreed to let out one of their own bedrooms for our friend to use, which was a nice gesture - but it would have been so much the better if they did not throw the surprise or make a huge fuss about it. The rest of the stay was pleasant. The food was very good and made with farm fresh veggies. We enjoyed and they were very good hosts for the rest of our stay.

The final shocker came at the time of checkout. When I asked for the cheque, he just took out a notepad, scribbled some numbers on it and gave it to me, not unlike what our roadside grocery wala would do. He was clearly doing it to under-report his income and save taxes. By that time I had lost all respect for Vijay any way, so I just took the "receipt" and walked away.

To summarize - the location is great, the views are great; the walks are great. But you never know what new shocker the owner will throw at you. Caveat Emptor!

One word to summarize the experience - blissful.

A perfect destination to get away from the maddenning city life. We chose this as it was away from the crowded & commercial place Ooty had become. Though the rough terrain to reach the place may initially put you off, you come to agree that it is absolutely worth it! The scenic view from the resort overlooking sprawling green tea gardens to the beautiful lake and surrounded by cloudy mountains is just picture perfect!

The weather was perfect with a little sunshine allowing us to explore the wilderness around. There are few must-see spots around the resort like the trek to the top, waterfalls nearby or the sunset point - unlikely to find such virgin destinations in the main town of ooty.
The family - Mr & Mrs Vijay kumar, their sons - Vinu & Vishant played perfect hosts in going out of their way to make us feel at home. The food was so homely and delicious.

The resident german shepherd Moby is very friendly and always game to play fetch. We would miss him.

This place is ideal for couples seeking solitude and pristine nature. Looking forward to our next trip to red-hills!

Room Tip: Choose the lake view cottage in front and enjoy the morning sunrise!

It is not quite a resort in terms of comfort or food, but it is a great B&B with it's idyllic location in the lap of nature. Perfect for unwinding for a weekend.

Pros:
1. Location, location, location: halfway up the hill, the lawns command a sweeping view of the tea gardens on the mountain slopes rolling down to the lakes. Sunrise is sublime, and you can laze around the gardens the whole day (and play with Moby, the resident German Shepherd)
2. Friendly family: perfect hosts who constantly ask for what else you might need, customize their service to suit your program. We got delayed on the way, so the staff stayed up till midnight to get us a warm dinner. We didn't have cash and they don't take cards - so Vijay was very flexible about us paying his acquaintance at Ooty on the way back.
3. Great many things to do around: (a) hike to the waterfall by the lake, (b) fishing early morning or late afternoon, (c) 3-4 hr (round trip) hike to the top of Red Hill for a fascinating view (must do), (d) ride to Avalanche and into the forest of Upper Bhavani, (e) the Toda village and trout hatchery are short and relatively less interesting detours from the Avalanche trip. With all these options, you can't be bored - unless you have kids expecting a Disneyland trip.
Cons:
1. Approach to the resort: a 4wd will not have problems, but the last 7 km ride from Emerald is less than ideal for a sedan or small car.
2. Pricing: The only disappointment we had was having to pay Rs.300 or something per night for having an electric heater in the room. It gets really cold at night, so that sort of thing should just be included in the tariff instead of being an irritant.
3. The food is good (a simple spread, but everything fresh and warm) - but can be much better. What I mean is, I won't avoid going here because of the food - but it's not one of those places I'd go to just for the food.

Room Tip: Choose one of the lake view rooms - especially in the old building.

I really can't add anything more to the praises already heaped on this property. The Scenery, food, the rooms, the hospitality, the quietude, all these make this a great place to unwind. My wife and I spent a weekend in September 2012 and were just bowled over. Vijay Kumar and his wife make great hosts and take a genuine interest in the well being of their guests. The climb to the top of the mountain behind the resort was exhilarating. Due to the rains in September, we couldn't do a lot more stuff that we would have wanted to but we'll come back. One of the best travel experiences I've had.

Room Tip: The lake facing ones are the ones to go for.

Great place to unwind. Amazing location near the Emerald Lake, about 30 kms from Ooty. The remoteness of the place and the unforgiving road to reach here may deter lot of tourists, but that is exactly what is needed to sustain the calmness and peace that you get here. We stayed for 3 days in Aug 2012 in one of the lake facing rooms. The hosts Vijay and Bhanu take good care of the guests. A small trek to a hill top behind the estate is a good half day experience. Do not miss cycling on the winding roads. Nearby trips are arranged to the Paarson's valley, Porthimund lake and Upper Bhavani. Food and stay quality are very good. Cars with low ground clearance may find lot of difficulty in navigating the road to this place, as the last 10 km stretch is very bad, and may cause some damage. But it is all worth it in the end for the wonderful experience of this place!
