I have always admired the concept, ambiance and the comfort of B&Bs. Any weekend retreats to catch up with your spouse, friends and family, one can never go wrong staying in a good B&B. It’s a home away from home, yet everything is taken care of, superior in quality than any 3 to 4 stars hotels and relatively inexpensive compared to any good hotels. Sherlock was our first B&B experience in India and it was unforgettable.

This bugalow, which has only 9 rooms, is located at the peak of the mountain with breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys, shrouded under oodles of clouds and mist. We rented one of the 5 luxury rooms which came with a balcony. The luxury rooms are addressed on the outer part of bugalow at the cost of Rs. 3270 +12.5% vat (approx. $77 per night @ Rs. 48.00). I highly recommend the luxury rooms, as the view from each of the 5 rooms is what one pays for. Needless to say, the cost includes continental and south indian breakfast each day. Don’t expect a wide array of choices, as they kept their breakfast menu small and simple catered to both vegetarians and non-vegetarians. They provide complimentary logs everyday, but anything in addition, is chargable. The bathroom provides hot water and rest of the other amenities are very basic. Their service is exceptional and the food menu is extensive for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians, which includes Indian, Chineese and Western (little bit of everything like philly cheese steak, grilled chicken in white wine sauce with sauted vegtables and rice pilaf, etc.). The food overall is quite satisfactory (Veg- try their Dum Aloo and any cream of soup, be it mushroom or esparages and non-veg- you can let go Murgh Do Pyaza but Dum Biryani to be considered) and the price is reasonable. They have some board games in-house, however, we carried our own games and cards. Food and snacks are available until 10:00pm everyday. They don’t keep any beers or wine at the premises, and the place has no shops within walking distance to get some. Therefore, if you would like to have some wine with your meals or in the evening, suggest that you get some on your way to the place (as well as the opener). Both tea and coffee is average, which I think, they can do better.

There are no major issues as such in terms of the place or the amenities. They should change their pillow covers and towels, which have been stained from rust for drying the cloths outside, but this is a problem I find in most of the 3-4 star hotels in India, so ADJUST and Overlook 

One definitely needs a car for the duration of the trip, unless you decide not to go anywhere. The place provides a car service to and from the airport at the cost of Rs.1700.00 non-AC one way, however, we opted for a car from an independent car service and kept the car for the length of our 3 days trip. The place is approx. 3hrs away from Coimbatore Airport and the drive is amazing. Do bring your own music !! It is highly advisable that one gets a local driver, than driving on your own unless you are extremely comfortable driving up and down in the mountain under adverse weather condition. We travelled at the end of October and the weather was quite nippy, therefore remember to bring your warm cloths. Local attractions consist of Doddabetta (Big Mountain, highest point of the Nilgiri Hills), Botanical Garden, Sim’s Park, Rose Garden, Pakhal Lake, Tea Estates (a must visit) etc. which are all within 7-10km distance. I will not recommend Ooty Lake, as I think it’s overrated and extremely crowded. You can grab a lunch buffet at the Taj Savoy for Rs. 450/pp. This property is also on a mountain but not as high as Sherlock and the view is not as great as Sherlock. If you planning this trip with your child(ren), then B&B may not be the best option, as there is no playground and swimming pool as such. Instead of flying from Chennai, one can take a train from Chennai to Mettupalayam and then take a toy train to Ooty but do check for the seat availibility and schedules in advance, especially during holiday season.

Overall, we loved our stay at the Sherlock. My husband and I are definitely inviting more friends and families to this place next time.

We went to ooty during the peak season and could not find accomodation for 3 nights in a row. So decided to split 2 nights at 1 hotel and 1 night at Sherlock.
I had read about thi hotel and the reviews were quite positive.

We decided to check in to Shelock and proceed to our short sightseeing trip to coonoor. But once we reached there, the view from the garden was amazing...we all just sat in the garden had a lovely lunch and decided to for go our sightseeing trip....
This Sight was way better than what we would see at conoor.

The rooms is cosy, we got 1 delux and 1 regular room. The delux rooms come with a small sit out overlooking the beautifully maintained garden.

The rooms have fire place and the hotel offers to put the fire on during the evening...we sure did light the fire ...bt after some time it got a bit smokey...

The food is good ....though the Breakfast buffet could improve.

Will definately recommend this quite litte place to all my friends.

I was there with my family in May 2008. With all our previous trips, we have used the '52 weekend getaways from Bangalore' book which has proved to be quite useful. However, when it came to Ooty and Coonoor, I have a few suggestions that book can incorporate (more on that later).
Since this was the peak tourist season, many of the good places were all booked in advance. After much deliberation, we decided to book in Sherlock. This is a heritage place which has been updated with some modern conveniences while keeping many of the beautiful classic features intact.
When we visited, the roads in Ooty were in terrible shape and very congested. The directions to the hotel given to us were of no use because of the construction that was going on. After quite a few phone calls and getting lost many times, we reached this hotel on top of a hill within the Ooty city. Once I saw the grounds and the view, all my fatigue associated with the drive completely faded away. The vista is simply breathtakingly spectacular. The cool crisp breeze; the slanting sun; the many many varieties of wild flowers resplendent in the Nilgiris valley is really a treat for anyone. The rooms were pretty and the staff very polite. The food was really good(the only hitch being they cant serve a good glass of wine since they dont have a liquor license. Anywhere in Ooty, one cannot find good wine!) The price for the room they charged is on the higher end but it included 2 meals and taxes. I think the view enough was worth it!! The staff needs a bit more training. All in all, this place is really well worth the money if you are looking for a place to unwind with your family with a bit of trekking, sightseeing, shopping thrown in.
However, the hotel right now doesnt have a suitable accomodation for your driver.
The 52 Weekend getaway book doesnt mention a store called 'Mohan's' in Ooty; it is definitely worth a dekko if you are interested in classic pieces. 'Needlecraft' in Coonoor gets a totally overrated mention in the book.
Coonoor is very quiet sleepy town similar to Ooty about 20 Km from it. There isnt as much to do there except the lovely Sim's Park . Its nice to visit from Ooty; maybe the Taj Garden Retreat situated there might be a great option.
