“Relaxing Escape”
Reviewed August 7, 2011

My wife and I went here in May to escape the heat in Hyderabad. The hotel has a beautiful view, the grounds are kept well, the rooms were clean and comfortable (especially with a fireplace lit at night), the food was good (though a bit pricey) and the staff were incredibly friendly. The hotel is tucked away from the noise and crowds downtown. Walls are a bit thin but most people come there to be quiet, anyway.

Particular compliments to Shiva and another staff member (so sorry to forget your name, but you know who you are!) who went out of their way to customize our sightseeing...even escorting us beyond their normal work hours to ensure that our trip would be so memorable. Highly recommend you go.

Room Tip: Would book the deluxe rooms which have a view to the lawn/mountains. The lowest rate rooms open dir...

You love your job or you do it for money. It appeared to us that the team at Sherlock did it out of love.

I and my family went to Ooty for mini vacation. After a lot of search, I finalized on Sherlock and booked 3 nights. Right from the time of booking till the time we left the place, the experience has been friendly, warm and professional. Some of the key points:

Type of Hotel:
The property is an old Bungalow that was converted to a heritage property 5 years back. We got the comfort of a star hotel and warmth of a home stay.

Location:
Superb! Fabulous! The view from the top is great and you feel as if you are staying in the clouds.
The hotel is situated on a hill top, about 2.5 kms away from city center. To reach it we had to drive uphill for about 2 kms. This was a challenge as the road was bad and had no lights at night. For the last 500 mts, there was no road.
However the view of the city from the top and the clean air more than made up for it.
( Note: people not having a personal vehicle/taxi may find it difficult to approach the place)

Decor:
Its a Sherlock Holmes theme based hotel. We got a feel of an old house with wooden furniture & chimneys. Each room is named after a Sherlock Holmes story. We loved the decor as its very different from the run of the mill hotels.

Rooms:
Very comfortable with ample space. The rooms and the baths are quiet large as compared to a typical hotel. Each room has a chimney which is lit every night. Beds are quiet comfortable.
There are 9 rooms on the property, 5 Luxury, 3 Semi Delux & 1 Executive. I'd recommend not to take the executive room as its situated next to the kitchen. The semi deluxe rooms open up in the dining rooms, so privacy is compromised. The semi deluxe rooms do not have any view. The best are the luxury rooms that are build adjacent to the main building. These rooms have their own sitting area and have an excellent view of the garden and beyond. If you stay at Sherlock, select the luxury rooms.

Staff:
We loved our stay there because of the good service from the staff at Sherlock. Right from the bell boy, Vivek, who lit the chimney to the waiter, Kanan, who made sure that we were well served during each meal. We were offered great service.

Food:
The breakfast is included in the tariff and it turned out to be quiet good. The breakfast included continental and Indian offerings and we loved it.
We dined once at Sherlock. The food was average and quiet expensive.

Music:
The selection of music played in the evenings was quiet good. I loved to sit next to the fire and read Sherlock Holmes stories.
I'd recommend this place to anyone who wants to relax. You can bring your choice of books (or select from the library here) and relax by the fire.

Pain point:
Hot water: I could not bathe with hot water for 2 days during our stay. I was told that one has to wait for 10 to 15 minutes, after one person takes bath, to get hot water. Well, this was not acceptable, but who cares when everything else is good, however this may be a pain in winter.
Also, I believe WiFi internet is available, but it was not operational while I was there.

On the whole I'll recommend the stay here and if I return to Ooty, I'll surely stay at Sherlock (maybe I'll return to Ooty only for Sherlock!)

Ady

Room Tip: Take the Luxury room. Avoid Executive room at any cost.

It was an amazing experience. The view from the valley, the sipping tea sitting on the bench outside, the plush garden, the evening walks around (do go up to that lake), the sunset view, the warmth of the fireplace and the yummy food (esp the breakfasts). The rooms are small and cozy, with each having a fireplace of its own. Each room is named after a Sherlock Holmes adventure. You can spend the evenings in th garden watching the stars or in the common room, playing chess, listening to music, besides the fire. It was so overwhelming, we spent 1 of our 2.5 day stay there in the resort itself, enjoying the simple pleasures of life. No too expensive, esp not compared to the service and the surroundings.Do try this once in you life, worth it completely.

We made the "mistake" of visiting Ooty during the Indian summer holidays in May AND during the annual flower show, so the hillside location a bit away from the hustle & bustle of busy town was perfect for us. We enjoyed relaxing in the garden overlooking the valley.

Although the food was a little expensive, we enjoyed both meals we had there. Our room was nice and big with a lovely fireplace. All was very clean. After dinner, there was a knock on the door and we received a hot water bottle from one of the staff. I would have loved to try the fireplace, but my boyfriend just got over a bout of feeling nausea so we did not want to chance it with the smell! As we had to leave quite early in the morning, the moved breakfast forward for us. Thank you again for a lovely stay.

had gone with a couple of friends and had come to know of this place when we were bumped of from another hotel in Ooty. We were dreading as to how is the place gonna be but to our surprise it was a gr8 place.

We got standard room which were pretty decent and clean with their own fire places...real nice. There are garden rooms also available which were all booked thus could not move there.

Its on a hillock and the view is good. It is an old bunglow from the british era and has been done up well. Prices for food were pretty reasonable and we enjoyed the meals.

There is a longe where u can play chess, enjoy ur drinks, play cards and have a nice little fire going by the side.

Loved the place

I stayed at this place recently (April 2011) along with wife, 2 kids and parents on a vacation to Ooty.

This place truly offers something different from many routine hotels in terms of its ambiance, quality of service and most importantly the location ! Though the travel to this place can be a bit daunting especially during rains (due to un-tarred road) and nights (No lights) and I hope the hotel management does something about the small stretch of road leading up to this place to make it more easier to drive - but once you reach there you will be charmed by the view you get from the top from where you not only get to see almost the entire ooty valley, you also get to see a wonderful lawn adorned with some very beautiful flowering plants that makes a really pretty picture.

The rooms are clean and practical though a few things need urgent upgrade like the TV and the cable connection they have (I had almost forgotten those grainy TV pictures that we used to see once upon a time before the DTH era ! It is probably part of their strategy to remind us of the by-gone era :-) but the fact that we had to spend a considerable amount of time in the evenings indoors due to rains and cold weather made it difficult for us to keep ourselves and the kids engaged - While I missed some of the IPL action, kids missed all their favorite cartoons. I would say this is a bit of an irritant in otherwise a wonderful place.

The food deserves a special mention as well. Though quite expensive, the menu offered good choice and the food was very Yummy as well. on the contrary, the complimentary buffet breakfast had very limited choices.

All in all, had a great stay for 3 days and returned with some wonderful memories of this place. This place could give any top Hotel a good run for its money if some of the minor irritants are taken care of !!!

Last Christmas, we went to this quaint, bunglow converted hotel. First let me say that the positives are too many that you tend to ignore the few negatives. One must go there without any expectations. Thats what we did.

The place is cutoff from main market area and all the commercial trapings of any hill station. We reached there through this impossibly narrow lane up the hill. Even the driver had second thoughts about this place! And I wondererd how dark and scary it wud get out there during night.

But once there.. it was beautiful. The main common hall was decorated with christmas stuff and carols were playing.. U instantly got a festive feeling... The staff was smiling and chatty but also gave u privacy.
The room was good. Bath clean. Fireplace worked like magic. It was very cold up there and the staff did there best to keep rooms warm.

Kids had a great time in the garden outside and we trekkd down couple of turns and enjoyed every bit of it! There are few locals around who are busy doing their own thing... Once when our ball got stuck in a huge thicket the neighbour came forward and took it out for us!

Food is the highlight here. Its not cheap mindyou, but worth it! Still remember how succulent the Rogan-josh was aand how crispy the hot dosas! Menu is short. You dont get overwhelmed with choices. One can eat even in the garden. The staff serves you there. We had our b/fast out there.

After dinner we spent time in the main house, listening to carols and playing chess. Next day we went to main market area and lake etc. But the Kids were bored and just ordered us to go back to the hotel!
That was pretty surprising considering there wasnt much for a 5 and 7 year old at the hotel! But I guess kids are also tired of traffic and general chaos of a tourist town.
Btw we got alcohol from the market as the hotel doesnt serve. Overall An Awesome Experience!
