Went to their town hall road branch near railway station. Dont be alarmed by the 'mess' in the name. Its a clean nice lunch/dinner restaurant in a renovated old house.
chilly level- not as spicy as andhra/rajastan/kerala,a bit spicy for western palette (But its probably the best level of heat for the dishes on menu). The food served is made to their traditionnal time tested recipes so no point asking them to change anything.
Must try- biriyani, keema balls fry/ curry, boneless crab, prawns fry/curry,crab omlette (or just ask the staff for kumar mess specials)
Taste, cleanliness, staff attitude/service,value for money all five stars.
This is one place you shouldnt miss if you are going to madurai.
when i went there i ordered just the biriyani and keema fry.they served onion/curd salad and mutton gravy with it. and additionally they started giving small cups of different gravies and i ordered full portions of whatever i tried. Over that, staff recommended to try seafood and i tried their prawn fry and crab omlette.
The portion sizes are good for one person and its possible to manage three to four sides with a biriyani(if you are a good foodie).
We ordered two mutton biriyani with one keema fry, prawns fry, prawns curry, and crab omlette between the two of us.
The bill came to Rs.840/-. Totally worth every single rupee. The food was more than enough but kept eating just because of the taste. And after eating (i had more than three fourth of what we ordered)so much i did not feel uncomfortable at all and in fact was feeling pretty light and well.
