This temple is so alien to western eyes that it is incredible to see. The towers are multi-colored and covered head to foot with sculptures. The interior of the temple is liking walking through some ancient Egyptian maze. Worth seeing!

“Huge temple complex - allow plenty of time”
Reviewed March 1, 2013

The Meenakshi temple is one of the most important Hindu temples in India and it’s immense. You have to remove both shoes and socks for this one, but beware; the intense sun heats the granite floors so much that any worries about foot hygiene are quickly replaced by worries about of spontaneous combustion. To add to the “fun” at various points we have to walk barefoot across unidentified wetness, scattered dried rice and the best of all gravel. At least any bacteria aren’t going to survive the blistering heat, but judging by the smell of burning flesh neither is my epidermis!

For our sacrifice of flesh to the Hindu gods we are rewarded with nine immense Stupas, the hall of a thousand sculptures, Hindu music played by a traditional band, an incredible atmosphere and some amazing scenes of devotion; pilgrims prostrating themselves before the holiest place in the temple. Our guide even recites/sings a litany from a Hindu scripture for us; a very moving touch.

Be aware that there is one area (the inner sanctum) where only Hindus are allowed (you'll spot it from the huge queue.)

We spent about 2h here and were somewhat rushed. I would have loved to have spent more relaxed time walking around so suggest that 3-4h is more realistic.

A must see in Madurai.

“A truly stunning experience”
Reviewed February 28, 2013

The seer scale and majesty of these temples are awesome in the literal sense of the word. Loved the elephant, who for the right change (it wouldn't accept any notes under 20 rps) would gently touch your forehead in a blessing. Our guide was great but we couldn't avoida quick visit to his sisters gift shop!!
