“A great heritage”
Reviewed February 9, 2013 via mobile

The largest temple complex in india , with the longest history. I many ways it is unmatched in history and significance. We wish we could have seen the gods and goddesses beyond the points where we were stopped, but still the temple is truly magnificent and the rush of devotees has to be seen and felt to be believed don't miss this place.

Thank Jesheart

We have heard a lot about this grand old temple and it was great in every way. The temple towers, the gods, the stories they are all rich in tradition. We went in at peak hours and the crowd is mind boggling.Remember no toilets inside temples and the ones outside could be better. Otherwise it is one of the most remarkable sites in India

“For tourists .. and the faithful”
Reviewed February 7, 2013

On a Thursday midmorning this temple is filled with tourists, and a few praying hindus - however it is still a marvelous place, even allowing photos (except in the hindu-only areas), against 50rupees. Also the holy men take position for the photographer, just as families with children beg to see their pictures on the camera.

“Between the pillars”
Reviewed February 6, 2013

This 17th century temple built in 2500 yrs old historical town of Madurai on the banks of Vaigai river is the main attraction of the temple tow. The temple town is built around this temple, the shopping complexes are built around it. To our surprise we find the standard rate of reaching this temple complex by auto rickshaw is 30 bucks. From the periphery from any direction one has to start walking towards the center to reach this temple. There is convenient golf cart to take tourists around the boundary wall of the temple. On auspicious days there will be long queue to go in. One has to take off shoes to go inside this temple complex.
In some other occasion i have gone right inside the temple and offered puja to the deity. The main attractions of the temple are the stone sculptures on the pillars. Specifically one visit thousand pillars to get the feel of the beauty carved out of rocks.
