there's construction at the moment. Can do the complex in a few hours so don't linger too long in Maduari 'cause there is not much else to see.

The facade is marvellous and worth spending some time looking at. Once you get in through one of its 4 entrances, you have to look for the Meenakshi temple(artistic and stunning), of Goddess Meenakshi who is the main deity here and then for Lord Shiva's temple on the premises, which is also very beautifully done. There are several other Gods and Goddesses on the premises who are equally worth looking at for their beautifully sculpted forms and cute little outfits they are covered in.

This is one of the most well-known temples in South India. The city is Mathurai, abt 4 hrs drive from the state capital, Chennai.

Ancient, built more than a thousand yrs ago from granite blocks. It is big, I mean BIG, vast, high ceiling, impressive, awe-spring, humbling, etc., etc., alright. It is actually a complex of individual shrines to various gods, the main deity being Goddess Meenakshi and her hubby, God Shiva. Four big entrances below 4 great towers, each of which can claim to be the main entrance.

It is easy to get lost in this situation. It induces the tendency to get lost in anybody, either in spirituality or in awe or in confusion, so, be careful if you are travelling in a groups with small children.

It is also crowded, since it a fully functioning temple, so there are thousands of visitors at any one time. Long queues of people waiting to pray, So they have 2 category of devotees: if you pay Rs100, you can join the shorter queue, which will allow you to see the deity in 20mins instead of 3 hours.

Strict crowd control: you have to keep moving so, you may only see the deity for 10secs. Watch out for that moment, and don't get distracted by the priests who always seem to be expecting some rupees. (Keep a few Rs10 notes ready in pocket).

Of course, if you don't actually plan to offer prayers, it is much easier. Walk around with a good camera, zoom in onto sculptures high up the pillars and towers. Advised to get a guide (abt Rs200) to hear all the stories.

The negative point is that the temple is in a crowded part of the city, surrounded by congested streets, hawkers, traffic jam, unplanned slum looking buildings, dirty drains and rubbish....etc, etc. You have to bear with all these in India,

Anyway, do give it a try, It is worth the hassle of getting there.

This living temple has been nominated as one of the seven wonders of the world. It didn't make the grade. Why? It doesn't offer the clean visuals of the Taj Mahal. What it does offer is a total immersion into Hindu culture, with music, smells, textures, artwork...It's breathtaking, overwhelming, and the best thing to see in Madurai. Highly recommend!
