I think i have been staying here once a year since 2004 as got friends in nearby Rameshwaram island which is about 3hrs drive away. It is not Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai - this is Madurai! It is a blissful retreat from the main temple area. The hotel has improved in the last year or so with an effort to make it nicer: trees are named, there are more peacocks and a 'green butler' who will show you the owls. Good to see the same staff esp Bala and Swamy from the poolside. It noisy in the mornings: this is mad madurai at its blissful best! Go with the flow!
After ten years, i still get lost in this vast maze of a property: that's the fun of it!
If you wander around, you will notice only the 'guest areas' are kept spotless. please clean the entire property and do not leave rubbish just lying around the hillside, etc. This is easy to sort.
No need to feel trapped: walk down the hill using the staff exit, take the bus into town to see the temple. The bus is expensive: 10 rupees!!! Then have a beer in town from the rooftop of Hotel Supreme. Take a rickshaw back!
Thanks to all staff! Highly recommended!
