We came down to Madurai from Taj Coromandel in Chennai. Had one of the best rooms/suite. Right from reception and check in the place is amateurish, most staff do not speak or understand English. Shown to our room, it was large but so utterly impersonal, no flowers, pictures, no plug, soap, bathrobes. Only two rather thin grey bath towels and hand towels and the most disgusting synthetic filled pillows that we had to ask 4 times to have changed, finally got them at 11pm. Great view from the room and lovely garden at the front of it, it could have been so nice. We had a good cocktail after which it was all down hill. We had lunch, only 2 other tables taken, took 45 mins and then lukewarm and had to ask for ice 4 times. There was a dreadful smell of drains that kept wafting up. Table cloth and napkins were grey and tatty. We booked a table for dinner, other side of the restaurant for dinner (looked inside at the restaurant and it was like a dining room in a low cost old folks home) There were 2 coach parties, budget, at the time we were there and this said a lot as they seemed totally at home. Dinner was about as bad as we have ever had in India. They took the order, 55 mins later we got 2 curries, asked where the soup was we had ordered for starter and they told us to get on with curry as soup would be out a bit later!!! Curries were barely above warm as was rice, we sent them back and asked for them to be redone, served on warm plates and dishes, came back the same, lost the will to live and the appetite, left it. Humble looking manager came and apologied, only thing ok about the meal was the v expensive European wine but we even had to ask them to bring clean glasses as mine had old lipstick on it - at £60 for a bottle of wine! Manager promised he wd make sure breakfast was better. Er, looked at the buffet and for a place that grows and sells loads of fruit it was a joke, the inside dining room is less attractive by the light of day, who would pay to eat there! Crikey, asked the guide if this is the best hotel in Madurai as we loved the temples and the place, he said 'probably' So, won't be going back, an utter dump for food and just about bearable for room if staying one night only.
