Visited this after a trip on the Nilgiri Railway from Ooty to Coonoor. Our visit wasn't planned but turned out to be one of our highlights of the holiday. Super Guide explained everything about the plantation, different types of Tea and took us right through the production process. This included dressing our and our friends daughter in tea picking garments complete with Tea Basket. The tour was fantastic and I highly recommend taking this in. There is a shop with opportunity to purchase tea and other items , what was nice was he helpful and completely non pushy staff .

I don't recall a charge but we did provide a tip - don't forget to Tip the Guide

We have been on a tea plantation tour before and at that time, we were a little disappointed. I see now that this previous tour was more of a tea museum! The Highfield tea plantation is a working tea factory, so you will be led behind the scenes as people make the different grades of tea. For the full-on tourist experience, there are some baskets and scarves to try your hand at tea picking. Obviously just for the cameras rather than your bed and board!

Our tour guide made it clear when asked that the tour was technically fe, but we could pay something if we wanted to. In the end, it was such an informative tour with the smells and sounds of tea being made that we gave him Rs 300, which seemed fair.

Worth a detour if near Coonoor.
