It was a glorious day for the train trip to Coonoor, and taking the beautiful Anita's advice at Lymond House up at Ooty we hired a driver to take us from the station to La Belle Vie for lunch in "upper" Coonoor. It wasn't that far, and the ride took us past some rather interesting residences which you probably wouldn't be aware of if you stuck to the main commercial area. It doesn't look too flash from the road, but once you're comfortably seated at one of the outside tables, you find yourself captivated by the essence of being in a hill station ... lush gardens, tall green trees and fresh air. There were two other groups there, young mothers whose children had ample room to gambol around on the extensive lawns. It felt like stepping into a nostalgic film set - the (mainly) Australian ladies clad in light colours wearing wide brimmed hats, and the Indian ladies in vibrant saris, and their children all mixed up together, playing games with whatever took their fancy (including some of the garden!). As many restaurants do not stock beer or wine, he went off with the driver (who was going to wait for us while we lunched) to find some local brew and I stayed behind and chatted to the almost expat Australian women who were soon ruefully returning home ... they knew the ropes and had brought their own wine. It wasn't too long before he returned with beer and we ordered some lunch - his choice was pizza and mine was antipasto - mainly because we wanted a break from strongly spiced (but delicious, nevertheless) Indian fare. Simple stuff, but delicious, much to our delight...but then, I guess, Anita wouldn't have recommended something dodgy. The genial host meandered over to us and we swapped some tales of misspent youth as those of our vintage are inclined to do at that time of day, and as the afternoon came to an end we summoned our driver - you know, there's an art to summoning, and there's no better place to practise it than at a hill station on a perfect sunny day.

On my last trip to Coonoor, while searching for places to eat, I found someone mentioning a something about a little French restaurant. Well, this is interesting, I thought. French restaurant in the middle of the Nilgiris hill station! A quick Google search gave us the number of the place, and then followed the directions from one of the staff. The place was not easy to find. While I was driving, my wife called maybe 3 times to guide us. Finally a sign near a small chocolate & ice cream shop proudly announced the way to La Belle Vie (The good life?).
The restaurant is located in a villa/homestay premises, the name of which I dont remember at the moment. As with most old buildings in Coonoor, the architecture is colonial probably dating from the British Raj times. The food is probably not completely French, as the most popular item on the menu is pizza. We ordered a grilled fish, and, yes, the pizza. The fish was certainly not grilled... it seemed it was pan-fried... but still nice.
Overall, a charming little place, and food has a homely-touch to it.

First of all the location is worth to die for! Amazing 180 degree view from the hotel. You have option to eat outdoors and enjoy the meal with free scenic beauty of Conoor!
The service is bit slow but don't mind as you get to see the view more. We ordered Pizza and it was very well cooked! authentic taste indeed!
The ambience is simply great for sure.
prices are on the expensive side but something you won't mind!
The hotel is great as well. I am going to stay here for sure indeed!

This restaurant is an absolute gem of Coonoor and we stopped by for lunch. The menu has an excellent selection of Indian, French, Italian and Thai dishes, each one that we tried was DELICIOUS!! I highly recommend this place because it also has a stunning view of Coonoor, a beautiful garden and a quaint hotel property too. We came back for another meal from Ooty as well and totally enjoyed the panoramic views with great food and non-stop eating! :)

they do punjabi, italian and french foods. prices are a bit expensive considering the competition though cheaper than the taj. mains from 250 to 400, service is good, unfortunately they do not serve wine or beer.

you can partake your meal inside or outdoor on the lawns, which is brilliant.
