Terrific location right next to the valley, clouds all over the place, away from the city noise with great food and facilities. Rooms are few and you need to book in advance. Ensure you have your own vehicle or get picked up by the hotel. The hotel will arrange for camp fire, matches if any on the big screen etc

It is a beautiful property with great service, perfect for spending a lazy week there. It also has a lot of history and character, making it a fun place for people looking for the British Raj in an Indian summer.

The service is really good overall, and there are enough activities for kids also.

We got married in Chennai and just wanted to getaway someplace closeby...he lives in Mumbai. So just looked it up given Taj's trusted reputation and was it wonderful or what!!!!Very very relaxing, quiet...sooooooo romantic....food and wine. The staff are very warm and friendly, room was cosy.Got a driver to take us around and he was quiet hospitable you know. Spent about 4d/n there and it was just what we were looking for..not too crowded, just a quiet spot to have a blissful honeymoon :) Totally recommended!!

this was a lovely hotel with beautiful gardens and lovely staff . some of the room exteriors could do with attention as they are a little run down but on the whole it is a pleasant place to be and very relaxing and romantic especially with a roaring fire in your room
the only thing that lets it down is the prices.compared to all the other hotels we visited this had by far the highest prices for food and services such as laundry and its own taxi service.
also when the website tells you you have paid you havent! no money is taken until checkout so im not sure why the website says otherwise

Our Cox and Kings party arrived around 5.30 to a lovely welcome, drinks and garlands. We four singles were put "out back" in the most modest accomodation (despite the huge single room supplement) compared with our couple companions, but our rooms were quiet and overlooked a lawn to make up for the lack of working fireplaces, lovely views etc, I read about in other reports. My room, 205, was a reasonable size but shabby, an old-fashioned English B&B or French small-town hotel c1970, with very inconvenient old furniture (no proper hanging possible in the wardrobe). The bathroom needed refurbishment, grubby looking towels, poorly finished tiling. The evening bonfire was pleasant. The promised buffet was unavailable and the thali I chose was ok but expensive. The second night we could have the buffet, which was again acceptable without being great and quite expensive, especially as compared with the great one I'd had a couple of days earlier at the Regaalis, Mysore. The breakfasts were of a reasonable standard.
Despite all the above criticisms, I did enjoyed my stay. The staff were charming and smiling, and the manager listened to my suggestions and has since been in correspondence with me and will, I'm sure, try to improve things. For instance, given the fact that the tap water is quite discoloured, I asked why they didn't use coloured towels rather than the ubiquitous white which will inevitably look grubby unless masses of unwanted bleach is used. He also took on board my remark about dirty switches and plugs, a frequent problem in hotels everywhere - the cleaners go through the same routine day after day, don't use their eyes. I liked the hot-water bottles - he who NEVER uses one at home - as the nights are cold, but I agree with another contributor who said there should be oil-filled radiators rather than blower heaters in the non-fireplace rooms.
The location is lovely, the early morning beautiful and the train to Ooty a must. I loved the brass plates on the bedroom doors. But why are the pot plants in this hotel and the Savoy Ooty, where we had lunch, so poor, given that wonderful climate?

The Gateway Hotel Church Road is quite a nice place to stay while visiting Coonoor. It is conveniently located around 2 kilometres from the centre of the city (1 km from the Sims Park). It has a nice garden with a playground. Staff i very nice and helpful. The only drawback is the restaurant, which doesn't live up to what we expected.

It was a pleasure to arrive at this hotel after the hair pin bends one had to endure! Reception staff were warm and offered the traditional indian welcome of garlands and a refreshing warm drink of ginger and honey (pretty nippy late afternoon). Hotel security and check-in were both efficient.
Our room was in a charming bungalow style building - large entrance which doubled up as a lounge area; even larger bedroom with a fireplace and ample storage space; a very modern bathroom. The extra large double bed was most comfortable and bed linen of a good quality. Evenings are very cold and the fire was lit for us (most romantic), hot water bottles provided and electric heater available. The large walk in shower was powerful but the bathroom was very cold and the towels had seen many better days.
We had breakfast and dinner at the hotel. Room service dinner was prompt but the quality of the food was mediocre and did not justify the high prices being charged. Breakfast in the main restaurant was a fine affair. Very wide choice of both south indian and continental dishes. Dinner experience in the main restaurant was most disappointing. We opted for a la carte - service was slow and when the fish arrived it was undercooked. As we were finishing our dessert, a waiter enquired as to why we had not eaten our main course (he had taken away the plates 20 minutes before) - he offered to reheat it! Much fuss was made but no complimentary drinks or a conciliatory gesture of any sort was offered - bad practice in my books.
Our only negative experience was at dinner times. Otherwise we had a pleasant stay here. The hotel grounds are vast and beautifully maintained - reading in the gardens or taking in the beautiful scenery was most relaxing. During the day the sun is strong but it gets very cold in the evenings. All the staff are most helpful and welcoming. The hotel grows all its vegetables on the site. The hotel manager inspires much confidence.
There is a lovely church right next to the hotel - we did not have the time to visit.
It is unfortunate that this hotel does not provide wash facilities or meals for drivers. We were on a private journey and most other hotels provided these services to drivers at a small cost.
