We got a place in the train only from Ooty to Coonoor, but,we were told that Coonoor to Mettupalayam is much more beautiful. As we were staying in Coonoor,it was worth going to Ooty to catch this toy train and go back down the memory lane.My children enjoyed it a lot.I think, all of you who are going to visit Ooty or Coonoor must book your place well in advance through Railway website as last minutes reservations are very difficult,as we saw lot of tourist getting frustrated atr Ooty railway station from early mornings for the place in the train.Have a nice journey.

“AN AVERAGE EXPERIENCE”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 7, 2013

My family travelled only from Ooty to Coonoor as we could not get reservation from Ooty to Mettupalyam or viceversa in Heritage Train.Though we enjoyed the ride through the valley, the fare for first class ride is very huge compared to the ordinary class. The view is Scenaric but you can view it from ordinary class also with less expenses and with almost the same comfort except that you need not stand in queue till the train arrives.

“Had higher expectations”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 1, 2013

The train journey from Ooty to Coonoor is quite a short and pleasant one. However, the views during the ride were not as per our expectations based on some of the reviews on tripadvisor. Some of the intermediate stops at the stations on the way could perhaps have been avoided for such a short ride.

“Simply stunning”

What a mixed bag of reviews for this train journey on TA! Well, we loved the toy train journey and travelled from Ooty, the hill station at 2,600m to Matupalayem at 314m. Our train departed at around 1pm and we travelled in January. Our tickets had been pre-booked by Audley travel and although we had first class tickets, there was great confusion at the queue and when boarding the train. We were extremely lucky and got into the first class compartment (after boarding 2nd class first and being disappointed with the seats, low-ish windows, so potentially not great views). So we felt very lucky indeed, when we managed to claim our seat at the back of the train from where we had fabulous views. Views of the country side, tea plantations, villages, people walking alongside the rail track. And during the many stops, it was just a pleasure to observe the ongoings on the platform. I bought some potato bhaji from a seller who just turned up alongside the train and it was the best bhaji ever! At Conoor the diesel engine is replaced by a steam engine, complete with the sound! The guy who manned the back of the train ensuring it wouldn't go hurtling down the mountain was every so friendly and helpful. For me it was the highlight of our India trip.
