180 McIver
Reviewed June 15, 2013

We stayed here for a night in early June 2013 and loved it. The gardens are beautiful, the view is incredible and the building has loads of colonial-era charm. We had one night in the hotel it's self in a very large, well decked out room. It was very comfortable, and pleasantly quirky (antique furniture and pink walls!). My only doubt would be that mid-winter that rooms might get a bit draughty but the small note above the fireplace offering you an open fire to be made up sounded so cosy, I'm now determined to return and find out! The food in the restaurant was really lovely too. And it's well located in Upper Coonoor, close to Sims park etc. the road behind was a little noisy but traffic is so light up there that this wasn't a problem overnight.

We stayed a second night in another property run by the hotel a little outside Coonoor which, if a little pricier, had even more colonial-era charm and a better view. It had more of a house than hotel feel (with its own wood panelled drawing room) and felt more private because of this.

What really made the stay though were the staff, particularly the manager, Suresh. Nothing was too much trouble. From arranging a late breakfast as we arrived off the overnight Coimbatore train, to finding us a trekking guide, or negotiating with a driver back down to Coimbatore on our way home.

Thank you Suresh, we'll be back before too long!

A lovely old colonial villa "restored" to perform as a period hotel, 180 McIver claims to have the best restaurant in Coonoor and we decided to drop in to see the place and pop a bite. The food was however quite disappointing, apart from being very late in arriving. Yet the staff did their best to "make up" for the delay and the slightly indifferent fare by apologising profusely and even offering to bring in a fresh plate of mutton biryani in place of the rather cold and tasteless one which was served. All in all however, the place has an interesting and different atmosphere, with dining tables on the large verandah and also some in the lawn under the trees. I'd like to believe that on that particular day the cook was probably not in one of his best moods, for we could sense that the management knew what they wanted to offer, and the decor etc. in the rooms do reflect this concern for quality. The staff are friendly and the manager was polite, welcoming and concerned. I feel that this place is a "must see" for any visitor to Coonoor.

We stayed at McIver 180 during May 2013 for 3 nights and 4 days. Drove all the way from Bangalore and reached the place around 5 in the evening. Stunned by the first look, we inspected the room booked and were amazed at the spacious Blackwood room. We took our first evening tea sitting on the lawn, over looking the town. One word to describe - Bliss, for a couple who work on the weekdays this was the sort of break we were looking forward to. The staff were very courteous and when we requested them to arrange a driver for us to take around Ooty-Connor they obliged and we got a very good driver the next day who was experienced and acted as a guide. We wanted to take the train ride on one of the days, the driver helped us arrange the tickets.

Now the room and the food: We had booked Blackwoods and it is the room to live in at McIver. If you are a couple then this is the best room you can get with its own patio and the room opens out to the lawn. The room is adequately furnished with a sofa arranged in way to watch TV, a table and chairs in case you want your dinner/tea in your room and the bathroom has all the modern amenities. This room also has its own attached walkin closet that has a nicely arranged dressing table, cupboard to keep your bags and dresses.

The Restaurant: run by a different management but was recommended to us by a colleague. Being accustomed to eating continental we did not try any other cuisine and were very happy with the food.

Room Tip: Would recommend the connecting rooms if you are a group of 2 or more families, else Blackwood is the...

This is a small hotel with only four clean, stylish and interesting rooms. The hotel itself is in quiet, well-kept and beautiful grounds. The views over Coonoor are brilliant. The staff are very helpful and you feel spoilt and well looked after. We were given a choice of Western or Indian breakfasts and both were excellent.

This property has great views over Coonoor and plenty of outside space, however the main road does run a the back of the property which does mean that traffic noise could be an issue if you are a light sleeper. The rooms are well appointed but the walls are thin and hence we heard everything in the next room.
We had heard fantastic reports regarding the restaurant , although the food was tasty it was not exceptional and the dinning room lacked . On the plus side they have plenty of staff who are willing to assist you

Absolutely fabulous location, not too far from town nor in the middle of the housing jungle coonoor has become. Mind blowing .
Rooms are excellent and furnished tastefully.
Attached restaurant is amongst the best in Coonoor
Can spend your whole day just lounging in the lawn. Old heritage property.. People who own this have been around since 1800's.

This is a 132-year old Heritage property that is well maintained. The rooms are spacious and have a fireplace (at least our room did). The decor is minimal yet tasteful.

The Staff are quite helpful. The Views over the valley are magnificent.
