“Unspoilt wilderness”
Reviewed November 4, 2012

After a long journey through the bustling North of India and after a few days staying with some friends in Bangalore, we set off on an epic car journey up into the Nilgiris to experience the Nilgiri mountain railway. We stayed at the O'land estate for 3 nights, and chose it because of its unique location and the fact that it offered something a bit different from previous places on or trip, we could easily have spent longer and we will certainly be back.

The drive up from Bangalore, through the Mudumalai park up to Ooty is breathtaking, stopping to see elephants and other wildlife on the way, slowly climbing up the hills, it's a delight to have the windows down as the fresh air and smell of fresh tea blows in the window, we arrived late at the O'land, and in the dark it's very difficult to find, but the estate manager directed us on the phone and we got there in the end.

The setting is serene and the surroundings beautiful, it's worth getting up early to catch the sunrise each morning, there is plenty of wildlife around and due to the remote location it feels like another world. We stayed in the hornbill house for one evening and the pepper for two, both were great, very clean and quite charming,we would recommend trying both if you have the chance.

The walk up to the tree house is not to be missed and we would encourage as much exploration as possible, we saw Gaur, a troop of Langurs, hornbills and many other wildlife including the evidence of sloth bears.

The estate is a 40 minute drive from Coonoor and the drive is spectacular.

All meals are included, and although it wasn't the best food we had on our trip, it was still very good,

the O'land is an unique and truly unforgettable experience and if you are planning on staying in this region, I wouldn't consider anywhere else.

As all other people over here has stated this place is very beautiful. The silence will be killed only with the chirping of the birds, and I'm not sure how many types of bird voices I have heard over there. The property is great for lovers and who have some type of adventure in them. I have stayed at the Hornbill house. The location is simply great and wonderful. The goods - Nicely located place very clam and silence is the key there. Good food very tasty and healthy too. Nice people to deal with very understanding and helpful manager Mr. Sajan. A great walk through is there to the tree top where there is a place to sit and enjoy nature. Its a walk but worth it. (Don't miss it)
The Bad's - No room service. We stayed in the Hornbill house and we had to walk for food to the estate house which was exciting for me but not if we have some elder people and kids with us. The walk is tiresome and hard.

Carry Airtel connection with you if you need to be connected there. All other networks are mostly not there. Other networks come in between and just drops off. Airtel is the best one to have when you are there.

Room Tip: Choose Hornbill rooms if you are couple and love some privacy in a great deal. But remember you have...

The thing my husband and I missed the most after we returned from O'land was waking up to the chirping of birds; parakeets, oriental magpie robins, red whiskered/red vented bulbuls to name a few. We stayed at Pepper House in June 2012 for a duration of 3 nights and had the entire estate to ourselves. The location is fantastic, Sajjan is very friendly (he also helped us identify birds when he realised we were interested), the cook (not able to recall his name) was also very polite and made simple yet tasty food. The cottages are quite charming.

This was my best experience in connecting back with nature with all the luxuries of life put into one basket.Kids also had the time of their life doing something new every hour and very excited about the feeling. The place was very picturesque, cottage and rooms neat and tidy. Bathrooms were clean and spacious which was a real positive for the family.Food was homely and to a very likeable taste..we had to respect the meal timings which i thought was fair, given the way the place had to be run.The hosts were very pleasant and gave us ample of space but were always around in case of any need.It was a pleasure interacting with them and gaining valuable knowledge about the area.A very enjoyable trip and we felt it was worth the money.Thank you folks at Oland.

Room Tip: Did not see all the rooms, but feel that all are quite good.

We were probably plain unlucky...that's the only conclusion after reading all the rave reviews of those who have stayed there before and since our trip. The estate and house is beautiful - no question there and it is a fantastic place to relax and walk around. Yes, the bathrooms were unique and aesthetically the house was well done up. Peace and quiet and animals and nature flourish.

This was a family trip with teenage children and our dog and we stayed at the estate house. For an estate-home-stay, I found the service indifferent, bordering on rude (the cook showed bad attitude and displeasure at even a 5-min delay from us and expected us to eat when he decided), housekeeping was non-existent, food was standard North-Indian-ambiguous and was usually served cold and at times not even enough, manager and wife were aloof (you could say they gave us 'space', or maybe it was us!), pet's were tolerated and not exactly welcomed and to top it all we had chocolates (lovers of Lindt dark chocolate will understand our pain!) kept on the table in our room, thrown away by the help. Our trip started badly too - we never got the promised directions and reaching the place was pretty tedious - you could say it was an adventure :-)

Before you begin to think that I am a cribber, I want to contrast this with a trip we made to Mugilu in Sakleshpur last year - also an estate-home-stay and pet friendly - that estate was not even half as pretty as O'land, but they made us feel so much at home and the food was just out of this world and served by the owner and his wife and with so much of affection and enthusiasm. To O'land's credit, we gave them our feedback and they responded positively, so I expect they will ensure this does not happen again...For us though, it was a memorable holiday - though not all for good reasons.

Room Tip: Estate house if you want to be close to the dining room (for elderly visitor, you will have to climb...

As the title suggests, this is what it was. The trip to O'land was a trip into innards of our own quiet. Even putting our feet down was a harsh noise.

While planning this excursion....both of us wanted a place which was aloof from the rest....we never wanted to venture out of the property in which we were going to stay...

O'land was all this defined.....and much more

Room was good, clean and there was no ounce of disturbance at alllllllll.....even if there was a family staying in the room above is or in a room besided us.......

Not to forget some nice chats with Mr. Sajjan on varied topics......

Last but not the least the food....was homely, very good and delicious....I wanted to wish the cooks Id Mubarak and thank them in person but they had gone to the mosque that day hence could not but better late then never.... we thank them whole heartedly for making our short vacation as one with the most everlating memories.....

a big thanks and wish to be there again some day...

The trip to O'land estate was great!

The place is ideal just to relax and do nothing! We stayed in the Pepper house. We went with my parents and my brother's family. So we rented all 3 rooms in the pepper house. 1 bungalow with 2 rooms(upstairs and downstairs) and another one with just 1 room.
The rooms were spacious and clean. The bathrooms were decent. Since the rooms were a little away from the main area, there was enough privacy. We just had to get out of the room for the gorgeous view!

There are well laid tracks from the cottages that we trekked. There was also a machan (treetop) that we trekked to(around 1.5 hrs trek one way). The trek was beautiful. We spotted a few bison, lots of monkeys and birds during the trek. We were told that elephants may visit us in the night.. But fortunately/unfortunately, we didn’t see any..

We did a tour of the tea estate and did some tea picking ourselves! Other than that, we just lazed around! At night, they lit up a camp fire for us and what a perfect way to end the night!

The kids who usually are glued to their video games didn’t even think of them while we were there. My husband made them a bow and arrow during the trek and they were playing with it and other stuffs they found during the trek!

The food was a mix of south Indian and north Indian - Not overwhelming; but very homely and tasty. The manager Sajan was very friendly. He gave us our space; at the same time spent enough time with us to answer our questions and to offer any help.

Just some things to note:
If you have older people in the group who have difficulty walking up and down, probably it is a good idea to book the estate house. Pepper house is a little far away from the main dining room and needs some walking. Hornbill house needs even more walking than the pepper house. But if you are keen on privacy, these houses are better than the Estate house which is right above the dining room..
It is better to call Sajan in advance to notify him of the food requirements. That’s the time you can request him if you need fruits etc during your stay. He also mentioned that if we had talked to him in advance, he could have arranged a round of golf for us.

This place is just about putting your legs up and relaxing after a long trek; Not the one for doing any sightseeing or travelling in and out of the place..

Am already looking fwd to my next trip to this place!

Room Tip: Pepper house /Hornbill house for privacy. The estate house for convenience, especially if u have old...
