Review of Courtallam

Courtallam (குற்றாலம்) or Kutralam is a town as well as a health resort on the Western Ghats in Tirunelveli District in Tamil Nadu. It is widely known as Spa town as many health centers are located here.
There are nine waterfalls in Kutralam. Honey falls (Thenaruvi, ‘then’ in Tamil means honey) is about 3 km from town and at 40m high and flows between two large stones. When there is no water you may see only honeycombs. Hence it is called Honey falls. The other important is Aintharuvi (‘ainthu’ means five-five falls) where you can enjoy bathing amidst a crowd of visitors like you. There are five separate falls of water here. During the rainy season thousands of people including Ayyappas, particularly from South Indian states come here to enjoy bathing under the natures curing falls.
Kutralam is not merely waterfalls because there are beautiful and architectural temples that attract the visitors. It is a popular bathing place for health reasons also. Several of these splendid waterfalls contain mineral properties that are considered to be good both for mind and body. Once you soak your head under these falls you will not forget that experience for ever. You know that these falls have curing powers on those who have mental ailments. This water contains lot of herbs and has medicinal properties as it flows through forests of herbs. Therefore it has therapeutic qualities to cure physical ailments.
During my number of yathras to Sabarimala I visited this spot on the way and had enjoyed the bathing. Normally people before taking bath take oil massage from the localites who are present on the spot with all requirements. Once I had slippery under the falls. Fortunately some Ayyappas saved me.
The trouble is that you can see and enjoy this falls only when there is rain on the hills so to say it is seasonal. Normally between Junes to December if the rains are very heavy the falls will be flooded but you are not allowed to take bath during floods time.
Kutralam is at 58 km from Tirunelveli and 6 km from Tenkasi Railway Station. From Madurai to Shenkottai buses ply are available during the season time when visitors can get down at Kutralam. The railway station is at Tenkasi from where you can reach the short distance in 15- 20 minutes.
There are numerous resorts, hotels, lodges and Luxury hotels near the main falls of Kutralam.

There are many waterfalls in surrounding of courtallam. Better to visit in May to september otherwise most of the falls will be out of water.
All of the courtallam falls are very safe to bath. Main fall is very crowded and dirty comparing to other falls. Five falls and old courtallam falls are clean and less crowded. Bathing space in falls are separated for gents and ladies.
If you are interest to bath in falls , better to choose five falls. water is very clean and cold.
People believes that water flowing through courtallam falls are runs through herbal forest before reaching to falls so it contains some herbal medicinal properties and its cure some skin diseases.
Taking a bath in Courtallam falls is a soothing experience.

Peraruvi (main falls) the biggest falls in Courtallam, is about 60m high. The flow of water is interrupted by the Pongumakadal, a 19m deep crater and comes down with greatly reduced impact, making a bath safe.In Chitraruvi (small falls), the flow is thin. Here naturally separate places for men and women are there to bathe. Chitraruvi leads to other waterfalls such as Shenbagadevi and Thenaruvi and the herbal farm. The three major waterfalls reachable by road are the Main Falls, Five Falls, and Old Courtallam Falls. Other waterfalls like Shenbaga Devi Falls and Honey Falls are reachable only by trekking on the mountain.we enjoyed with friends with family.....

Hello friends,
I am living near to Courtallam, in the month of May to July, it will have a season. In other rainy days it has some water on the Mainfalls. Me and my family will spend a day within Courtallam and Tenkasi temple. We had a bath over there and watched a film in PSS Tenkasi then visited the Tenkasi Vishwanathar temple in the evening. Whenever we had freetime and season we planned like this. Definitely you will enjoy an oil massage and get a refreshment here.
This is a best place for a budget travel in Tamil Nafu.

I thing this experience will useful to you.

Have a nice Journey.
