This hotel is all about location, very central, five minute walk up the road and across the footbridge and you’re in the midst of all Udaipur life.
The hotel’s exterior is painted white with some traditional wall drawings depicting Rajasthani life. I stepped into the courtyard and looked up at this beautiful old haveli which for some reason felt like stepping into a scene from the film the ‘Exotic Marigold Hotel’ part of which was filmed in Udaipur, and I expected to see Dev Patel and Judi Dench appear at any minute! The hotel lobby was large with nice old Rajasthani furniture. The ceiling was hung with coloured glass chandeliers and one area of the lobby was sectioned off with beautiful old wooden screens for breakfast.
My room on the second floor was fine, spotlessly clean but with slightly dated dark furniture. Glass windows led off the bedroom to a jharokha with two cane chairs and coffee table. The jharokha backs onto Lake Pichola, but unfortunately the sitting area itself was a big disappointment as you had to share it with the air conditioning unit!!! but, on the plus side, there was beautiful views across the lake to the old city. During the day you could watch the women of the old city doing their washing at the waters edge and at night you had the lights of the old city twinkling in the distance. Perfect location. The hotel had a nice homely feel with the corridors on each floor adorned with family photographs.
Its most impressive feature however was possibly its beautiful roof top restaurant which overlooked the lake and which was delightfully decorated with scatter cushions and canopied eating areas. It was a lovely spot to sip a honey bee in the evening and watch the twinkling lights of the old city and city palace on the other side of the lake.
This hotel was all about the views. The staff were courteous but not overly friendly and whilst the hotel was extremely good value for money I think if I were to go back I would probably stay in the boutique hotel opposite where their rooms were of a better quality.
