We stayed with our two kids in December in a suite. Service was formal and not particularly friendly. The room was nice as you'd expect for £300 a night but the bathroom fairly tired. The pool was too cold to swim in. The food was ok, good continental choice as well as quite interesting Indian. It generally lacked any atmosphere. It's position is good as you'd expect being part of the palace complex but nothing is too far away in the centre of Udaipur.

I would not recommend staying here unless you like really formal service with no atmosphere. Much better to go stay in a lake facing suite at the Jagat Niwas Palace where we stayed as well and although no pool it has a great roof top restaurant and lovely chill out areas with gorgeous lake views and was simply charming, with really lovely warm staff.

Room Tip: We saw standard rooms and they were small with poor views. If you are going to stay here you need t...

Was very disappointed by the doubt in the eyes of the manager for a missing towel after staying in a suite which would have bought more than 100 such towels.

Was impressed by the location of the hotel , hence cancelled a suite in a local hotel for 3 nights which was not refundable And payed as much money to Fateh Prakash , just for making wife have a good view.

But , please be careful for missing item in the room if you visit the hotel , as you may have to bear the embarrassment of being asked and account for the item in front of 10 people , which you may not even give a 2nd glance.

Fateh Prakash Palace
The hotel is located inside the City Palace complex, which has 2 hotels (the Fateh Prakash Palace hotel and the Shiv Niwas), a museum with a central courtyard outside which has a restaurant and several small shops. A short walk outside the complex you will find many small hotels, shops and restaurants.

As a hotel guest you will be given a security pass, carry it with you at all times and be prepared to show it before you can re-enter the hotel. Security is very tight here as the Maharana who owns the HRH hotel chain still lives in a palace on the grounds and there are armed security staff standing guard (in other words, don’t go anywhere you are not allowed to go).

Rooms are spacious and the bathroom has a shower and bath. Our room had a lake view and every day they gave us complimentary fresh fruit, cookies and bottled water. The staff were very friendly and always available/willing to help (but did not intrude on our personal space).

In the evening, when the sun begins to set you hear the loud cries of birds, we were surprised to learn they were parakeets, hundreds of them flocking to the trees outside the hotel for night. The noise was deafening at first, but they quiet down quickly. It is a nightly show (really, people literally go outside to watch it).

Restaurants
Sunset Terrace at the Fateh Prakash Palace overlooks the lake palaces. It is a lovely place for a drink (450 Rps) and dinner (850 Rps). We had dinner here one evening and were lucky enough to see fire works going off over the lake. Breakfast is included with the room price and this is where you eat in the morning. The breakfast is great, fresh baskets of pastry, toast, croissants. Small jars of preserves and butter. They serve eggs and bacon, waffles with whipped cream and fruit sauces.

The City Palace museum is a must see (entrance is only 25 Rps for an adult). You can also take a 1 hour boat ride (300 Rps for an adult) and you are allowed to get off and spend time on Jagmindar Island Palace. There are washroom facilities and a nice bar where you can get drinks. After you are done, you can catch the next boat going back (so if you have time, plan to spend an hour on the island).

Central Courtyard has a Chowk with reasonably priced stores. There is one which has a Bookstore and carpets/textiles on the main floor but go upstairs, where they have souvenirs, jewelry and even mouse pads with a beautiful scene of the Lake Palace. There is also a store that sells great sandals for good prices (but as always, bargain) and other leather items like wallets.

There is a European style café that serves good food (sandwiches, etc.), a variety of alcoholic drinks, Diet coke (130 Rps) and great desserts (355 Rps) like pies and chocolate/walnut tortes.

Room Tip: Ask for a lake view

We stayed here for one night and just could not get enough of anything. Priced definitely on the higher side, but you get back worth every penny spent. This is the palace where dynasties of kings of Mewar had resided and guess who's there next building - The present king and his family. To discover the palace around where you stay will take a comfortable 2 days. So you can keep the rest of Udaipur for the next lot of days.
You realize here that the place you are staying itself is a tourist attraction in Udaipur. With the package comes all the required passes to explore the palace completely.
The dinner was one of the most amazing Ambiance/Taste you will ever experience. The restaurant staff allows you to enjoy each course of the meal at leisure. The dinner is an experience that you can carry on for 2 to 3 hours feeling the place in all its glory. The staff really works to give you this spaced out feeling.
The only thing that other places in Udaipur can give you, that this place cannot, is the view of Fateh Prakash itself. ;)
There is live classical music playing at all the meals including breakfast.
The staff is exceptionally well behaved and friendly. Its like you have gone to a house of a really nice friend. Everybody is so happy to help you.
It was my wife's birthday we were bringing in. With this information that I gave the manager, apart from greeting us with the midnight cake, all the staff - room service, restaurant staff, the reception desk, all were wishing her. So as long as you are there you really feel like you belong there.
If you like Rajastan and all the royalty around, this is a must visit.

Room Tip: Anything that is lake view.

Other reviews seem to suggest that timing is everything. We stayed two nights in early November (immediately after the busy Diwali holiday). The hotel seemed empty and we were upgraded to a suite - very comfortable.
The staff were on the ball and very obliging. We ate in both restaurants and enjoyed excellent meals and service in them. The lakeside restaurant is our favourite for dinner. The restaurants' are quite expensive (for India), but the food's very good.
I guess if you stay at a busy time, you may not enjoy the hospitality that was afforded to us - we found no faults at all, on the contrary there's much to commend it. However, as I say - it was quiet and sevice levels may drop during busy periods.

We stayed for 2 nights at this hotel. We were warmly greeted and told that we had been upgraded to a suite. The suite was excellent with superb views over the lake. The hotel is part of the palace complex and full of history. We ate in the sunset terrace restauarant 1 night and for breakfast-the food and service were very good. The town is safe and offers alternate dining arrangements but for the views and service the Fateh Prakash could not be beaten.
We would recommend this hotel in the beautiful city of Udaipur

The best hotel of our trip. First of all the manager gave us an upgrade to 2 suites as our car journey in Rajastan had a few problems due to the people demonstrating and blocking highways. So a very good start as our suites were located in the actual Raja residence. The view of the lake was amazing as well as the rooms - huge with fantastic furniture, bathrooms and amenities. We only ate breakfast in the hotel that was fantastic on a terrace overlooking the lake. In Udaipur there are many options to eat out (check out Lonely Planet) and the hotel is perfectly located to go around town on foot. The town is safe and people very friendly.
Fantastic experience in the most beautiful city of Rajastan.
