“Hotel overlooking the lake”
Reviewed March 21, 2013

This hotel is right by the lake but is impossible to get to except by tuk tuk. We had to get off our transport with luggage some distance from the entrance. The rooms are situated around a courtyard on several floors and there are a lot of stairs to climb. The rooftop restaurant is one of the best views in India and eating there as the sun goes down is a must. The food is excellent with attentive staff. Our friends had a room advertised as, 'with a balcony overlooking the lake' and were really looking forward to it and were disappointed to find they are all enclosed balcony's which to me is not a balcony at all. A better description would be a bay window. We were lucky enough to be given a room which is a one off standing alone situated on top of the top floor at the rear but still with glorious views across the lake. This room can be seen sitting on top of the hotel by itself in some photo's but i'm afraid i don't recall the number.I would stay here again without question. I recommend a trip on the lake at sunset as well, stunning.

I loved this hotel. I did not have a reservation and just arrived. I was very lucky to get a room and it was lovely. Pretty window seats lined with a rug and pillows to rest on. Comfortable bed, quiet. Aside from all that it has a three storey open courtyard with lots of seating areas that is stunning. People who were not staying there were making reservations for dinner at their excellent restaurant with views that are unforgettable. People were arriving all the time asking for a room and mostly they were sold out. So, if it fits in your budget (it is a moderately priced hotel on the higher edges of that designation), make a reservation.

Room Tip: Aside from the beautiful and higher priced rooms around the courtyard, they do have a small wing of...

This rather unoriginal title does sum up the hotel (haveli), the location on the edge of the lake, with fantastic views of Lake Palace is unsurpassable. We had a Raj room with lake views (and did not unduly suffer from noise, which was restricted to evenings caused by scraping chairs from the restaurant above). This did not bother us and it was quiet at night. We agree with another reviewer that a fridge and coffee/tea making facilities would have been useful, but the price for this hotel made it still good value for money.

The food on the roof tip restaurant was excellent, but we did have a problem with the service. We had booked a table and confirmed it early evening, yet they had given away our table to another couple. This should not happen and we did not eat here again (went instead to Ambrai just across the water).

This was however a minor point and we did enjoy our stay at Jagat Niwas, for the position, and the views. We would stay here again.

Room Tip: Book a lake side room.

We loved this old Haveli. Beautifully situated next to the lake with views of the Lake Palace, Jagmandir Island and wonderful sunsets from their rooftop terrace.
Our room was huge with a wonderful view over the Lake Pichola.
Would not recommend this if someone has problem with stairs. There are many stairs to the restaurant and the rooms.

This hotel is rather broken up for finding your way around. The restaurant is on top floor is open air with incredible views of the lake. Food was exceptionable. Service was as good as the food. Room was huge but not fantastic.

Our room, without a view and therefore very reasonable, was spotless, comfortable and quieter than those on the Lake View, restaurant side. The hotel ( a challenge to reach by taxi) is marvelously located for walking to the most important sights (Jain Temple and City Palace) and nearby quality shops. The staff was very helpful. Dinner was delicious and the breakfast (with marvelous birds outside the window) was scrumptious. A pleasure all around.

Room Tip: The rooms away from the lake are cheaper and quieter. As one can always sit where you can view the...

On occasion, one comes across a gem of a property that has one selfishly thinking whether it should even be 'reviewed' and announced to the rest of world... Jagat Niwas was just that!!

Located at the edge of the beautiful lake Pichola at Udaipur, a short rickshaw ride from the railway station and a quick walk to the Udaipur Palace, Bagore-ki-Haveli and other historic monuments, this pristine little white haveli is most certainly an experiential travelers delight.

Don't go looking for a typical 5-star ambiance!! There is no swimming pool, spa, business centre, gym or any other amenities other than all day dining of an average quality. And staying there involves climbing up 3 floors (if you want to visit the rooftop restaurant with its gorgeous view across the lake). But if you do want a quaint, one-of-a-kind Udaipur experience, don't bother to look any further.

The best rooms (do I need to say) are of course the ones with jharokas (traditional Rajasthani balcony) that overhang the lake. But if you're on a tighter budget, then the deluxe rooms towards the rear are quite charming as well (although a bit compromised on the privacy front with windows overlooking the internal common area and with little or no fenestrations overlooking the street) and you can instead spend your time seated in the restaurant with its lake-view alcoves instead. The rooms, although minimally appointed are spotlessly clean and well-maintained and the staff is efficient and amiable - even my booking experience, directly with the hotel via internet, was extremely efficient and painless.

Of course, I would certainly agree with other reviewers that the instant geyser (for heating water) is rather small, although it never ran short during my shower. Bathroom toiletries very basic, no tea & coffee maker, fridge etc and I can't be too sure about the wi-fi internet, the beds don't have a plush mattress (although they are comfortable!) and you have to pay for breakfast over and above; but really, we are talking about staying in a haveli and this is the experience that one should enjoy!!!

After visiting some other extremely over-priced (and I would say in some cases, seriously over-hyped) heritage properties, in the vicinity - including some of the rooms offered in the nearby palace hotel, I have to say that my friend and I were completely convinced that we had truly hit upon the real deal.
