Flew into Mumbai, had a 5 hour wait for the connecting flight which wasn't great as all the lounges are closed. Jet airways connecting flight was excellent and Udaipur airport (very new) was very effficient.
We were met by a charming driver in a Jeep from the Hotel, who had cold towels and water, which was a very welcoming start to the holiday. The arrival at the hotel was fantastic, the jeep dropped us at a jetty and we arrived at the hotel by boat, awesome. The hotel buildings are quite stunning.
We were very early at the hotel (about 8am), but the room was available immediately, another perfect start after a long journey from London. We had wanted a Lake view room (they have direct access to a semi-provate pool), but there were none available for the whole of our stay for us to upgrade to, and whilst the hotel did everything it could to help us, because we would have had to change room twice, we decided to stay in our allocated room (312), which as it turned out was perfect as it opened onto the main pool.
The room was very nice, very big and comfy bed, well appointed bathroom with free standing bath and seperate large shower, TV has pleanty of sport channels. I object to paying for internet access (£11 a day), I think that these days, a modern 5* hotel should have free, and wireless internet, this hotel does not have wireless and you have to pay even in the business centre.
As our stay was only one week, we wanted to have a relaxing holiday with some "light" sightseeing, the manager, Torsten, who had introduced himself when we arrived, discussed with us what we wanted to see/do and organised a perfect excursion itinery, with an excellent guide.
We spent our time at the hotel at the main pool and the spa pool, both are lovely, with the pool service at both, quite outstandng, (water, bookmarks, water spray, sun cream).
We ate breakfast at the hotel every day, it is buffet style plus some a la carte options, the breakfast is very good, not amazing, but very good, with fresh juices, pastries, cereals, cold meats, fruit etc.
We ate dinner at the hotel every night ( a mix of room service and restaurant) bar one, the food, a selection of local and international cuisine, was excellent, as was the service. I thought the wine was expensive.
We ate lunch at a near(ish) restaurant (Ambrai), recommended by Torsten, I thought the food (local) was every bit as good as the hotel, and, as you would expect much cheaper, but clearly you take more of a "risk" if you eat outside the hotel.
We also ate dinner at the Lake Palace, which, whilst the food was good, the 3500Rps (£43) minimum charge per head for the food only, is a complete rip off as there is no way a couple can eat that value of food unless you are monster eaters !!
My partner had a spa treatment, which she said was fantastic, the treatments seemed to be ok priced (£50 for 1 hour treatments).
The gym has 2 treadmills, a bike and cross-trainer as well as a decent selection of resistance machines (upper and lower body) and some free weights (up to 50lbs).
Checkout was very efficient, it was great tto be able to have breakfast in the room before our early departure.
Return flight to Mumbai was fine, but a word of warning for Mumbai t/f's, the International Terminal is seperate from the domestic terminal, they are connected by a bus which only runs every 30 mins (it is prob a 15 min journey), so be prepared for a potential wait and also there are a lot of security checks at Mumbai, so allow yourself plenty of time.
To sum up, it is a stunning hotel, with great staff, superb management, great pools, spa, good gym, good food, it is easy to understand why it has won so many awards.

Every Oberoi Hotel belongs in a different league to other chains, but this really is special. Everything faultless and exceptional.

Add the views of the Lake and Palaces, and the wildlife (especially the birds from the Pool Suites), and you can understand why this wins prizes.

We with the husband have stayed two days in this hotel. The husband has already written the review about it. I would like to add, that most of all we were amazed arrogance, impudence and peremptory of tone of a management. Full certitude of one's infallibility and impunity. Recently having read any review about Udaivilas , these unpleasant memories we have gone through anew. To think only! Us also blamed that we have left a wallet for two hours out of the safe! It is hotel managements logic! But it should accuse to the thief and its patrons. After all the hotel administration contrary to the law and our requirements has refused to call the police! (But it anyway a question to the prosecutor). Besides at us have stolen not only money, but also a mobile (and the most valuable SIM-card). He too should be hidden in the safe in this hotel? We stayed in more than 100 hotels worldwide, but to us didn't occur to hide in the safe the mobile. The most usual, not the precious. And it have been never stolen! What in that case in Udaivilas it is necessary to hide in the safe? All luggage? to feel in safety from thieves? But it impossible to be placed!
About muddle-headed personnel and about tummy trouble after dinners it has been written in reviews about this hotel before our visiting. It already the public opinion.
It is very a pity, that such beautiful hotel has such boorish management. It doesn't recognise the errors and isn't able to apologise. But it very well is able to argue with the guests (denying the obvious facts) and to offend them. It isn't impeccable, but is simply stupid.

Oberoi-Udaivilas, The General Manager at The Oberoi Udaivilas, responded to this reviewResponded April 16, 2008

This review is written by the second guest who stayed in the same room with "Aion", who wrote a report on their stay at The Oberoi, Udaivilas in February 2008. As this relates to exactly the same visit, the Hotel's response there - and here - reads as follows:

Having read "Aion"s review, I would like to respond personally. As the guest wrote in his review, I met up with him and his wife during his stay. Just before check-out, the guest contacted the Reception desk that several belongings were taken from their room. This is the first time that I personally have had to deal with such incident at The Oberoi, Udaivilas. We simply do not have a history of theft at the Resort. I personally led the investigation and based on their very specific statement, I was able to ascertain through our electronic key system records, that no-one had entered their room in their absence. I personally conveyed this to the guest and asked him if I could help in any other way. I offered to obtain a rental mobile phone on his behalf for the duration of his time in India and enquired whether he needed some money in cash, to help him tie over the remaining days of his holiday. I also offered to accompany them personally to the police station. They had been out visiting several sights and in all probability this is where the theft took place. Throughout this several members of my team were with them to ensure that they were comfortable. Their English is not fluent, which must have been hard for them at the time so I wanted to be sure they felt understood . It is notable that several minutes prior to our discussion, the guests had filled out our guest feedback form, which clearly stated that our services generally "exceeded expectations" and that they had a nice time. After we had denied our involvement in the disappearance of his mobile phone and money, he wrote these complaints upon his return to Russia. I have written to the guests twice to try to repair the relationship and asked for their telephone number, which was declined. They did threaten that if we would refuse to refund the money or supply a new mobile phone he would write to tripadvisor. Torsten van Dullemen, General Manager, The Oberoi Udaivilas

During a tour of Rajastahn we stayed three nights at this really super hotel. The architecture and facilities, with two pools and acres of gardens, is outstanding and the views across the Lake to the Palaces of Udaipur quite stunning. Add to this superb luxury accommodation, outstanding staff and excellent choice of food with choice of restaurants and al fresco dining it made the stay one of the most memorable in our three week tour of the region.
A hotel which is ideal for all ages - we felt privileged to have stayed!

We began our 2 week tour through Rajasthan at the Udaivilas; what a beginning! Simple words will not even begin to accurately describe our stay. Sheer perfection. From the moment we arrived until our departure, we experienced pure relaxation and bliss. Our expectations were high and every bit of our expectation of a memorable trip was met and exceeded...from the property itself to the impeccable, friendly and most thoughtful service we have ever experienced.

Every member of the staff, from the waitstaff who impeccably catered to our every whim and greeted us personally by name each and every time we visited the bar or restaurants, to the groundkeepers who, by the beauty of the the immaculately kept grounds are obviously kept quite busy, greeted us with a friendly smile and 'namaste' each and every time we walked past.

We felt completely and totally spoiled and pampered in every way and we will never forget the incredible memories that we brought back; not only of Udaivilas but of Udaipur which is a city that absolutely charmed us.

I do feel compelled to respond to the person who provided the previous review because it was totally shocking to me to read those comments alleging theft, the quality of food and service.

Firstly, we could not have felt more safe and secure than we did at this property and had the utmost trust that the staff was professional and very scrupulous; we never felt that we had to worry about theft or our safety at any time. Each room is equipped with a safe to store valuables - shame on the previous reviewer for not using it.

Each meal (including breakfast) was more delicious than the next. In addition to the breakfast buffet, which must be what the previous reviewer is referring to, there is a wide range of cooked-to-order ala carte menu items that were wonderful. I felt completely safe eating things that I had been 'warned' not to eat in India, such as bacon and various juices. It can be a tad chilly at night (if you choose to eat outside but there is also an indoor restaurant as well) but within one second of noticing that I was the tiniest bit uncomfortable, a shawl was brought to me and the staff not only moved one of the portable fire pits and tall kerosene heating element closer but they also gave us an additional one. There was one evening that I did not finish my meal and the chef came out to personally ask why I didn't finish, offered to make something else and even offered to create a meal for me that was not on the menu. That is the standard of service that we received at each of the Oberoi properties we stayed at during our trip and feel it is highly unlikely that it will ever be matched anywhere.

We most highly recommend this amazing, enchanting, property and can only hope to visit again ourselves in the future.
