“Beyond expectation”
Reviewed December 2, 2013

The minute you arrive aboard a small boat you are greeted by a welcome drink and rose petals cascading down from a balcony! The service is unique and beyond expectations. My husband was in a wheelchair and a staff member would personally push his chair wherever he wanted to be and assist him at all times. The rooms were beautiful and luxurious and surrounded by the lake. White marble glistening in the sunshine gave you the feeling of staying in a regal palace and being treated like royalty. It is truly a one of a kind experience that will never be forgotten.

One of the most unique luxury hotels in the world. Imagine a marble palace in the middle of a pristine lake, with very room overlooking water. Very few hotel experiences anywhere can match the Taj Lake Palace. My first impression on arriving by boat the evening, was that of entering an illuminated bespectacled jewel in the middle of a lake. Maybe James Bond felt the same in the movie Octopussy.. Rooms are of standard size, with the usual luxury amenities. What is unique is that you feel like you are in a marble boat floating in the middle of water. We had most of our meals at the Jharokha restaurant which faces the City Palace. Try to book a table at one of the turret extensions, which gives you a far better view. Food is multi-cuisine but one can also order an Indian cuisine using the menu of the adjacent fine dining Neel Kamal restaurant. Try the Rajasthani 'tali' which is a sampling of a variety of local fare. There is a nightly one hour cultural performance at the courtyard. As in most luxury Taj Hotels, the service was impeccable. Particular mention too, of staff Rose, at the Jharokha who made our stay even more memorable. There may be other newer luxury hotels in Udaipur like the Leela or Oberoi, but these are located on the mainland facing the lake. What sets the Taj Lake apart is its location in the middle of the lake and its 270 year history. For a once in a life time experience, nothing matches the Taj Lake Palace.

Room Tip: Rooms on the North side face the City Palace

We had dinner at the Oberoi the day before checking in at the Lake Palace, and we thought "Woa, a pitty we are going to stay at the Lake Palace, it's difficult to get better than this." But when we finally got there, it WAS better!! So much better. The place is simply stunning, the staff very friendly and very very solicitous, often going out of their way to help us out, even with little things. The hotel makes your feel like you belong there and we're very said to have stayed only a night.

Me and my boyfriend stayed here as a treat for his 30th birthday. It was worth every penny. It is a truly magical and extraordinary experience. We sat in one of the turrets in the restaurant at breakfast looking out over the lake, simply incredible. I can't recommend this place more. If you only ever stay in one luxury hotel in your life I think this should be it. My only complaint would be that the staff are possible too attentive, but I don't think that really counts as a negative.

Magic, magic, magic.

To arrive at Taj lake Palace you are taken over the lake by boat with lake Palace in view - stunning. Stepping off the boat and then welcomed to TLP with a shower of rose petals. Check in smooth n quick with a refreshing drink.
Rooms were large and comfortable bed. Views astounding, must be the only hotel with lake views for all the rooms. Having breakfast at the lotus garden with beautiful views again. Service impeccable, Taj high standards maintained. All the staff, friendly, well spoken and wanting this visit to be special for you. A waiter recommended something on the menu to my husband after the chef came out to ask if he enjoyed it. Yes he loved it. Rooftop views beautiful and restaurant. They also hold every evening Rajasthani musicians playing with traditional dances. They also take u on a guided complimentary heritage walk of the TLP at a set time. Did not have time to use spa n swim facilities.
It is about 10 mins from the boat to City Palace, plenty of sight seeing to do. Udaipur is a destination for weddings too!
Forgot to mention TLP is the most romantic place to be just surrounded by beauty - heaven!
5 stars plus!

My wife and I just celebrated our 25th anniversary with a trip through India, including a three-night visit to The Lake Palace. Our stay was incredible and we’ll cherish our time there for years to come. From the time of our arrival to departure, the staff anticipated our needs and ensured that the experience was beyond our expectations. We felt celebrated.

Like others have noted, The Lake Palace is an older, historic property. We equated the building and space to Raffles in Singapore or Villa d ’Este in Como. The Lake palace has a lot of stories to tell and a ton of character. As we found, the hotel also has a lot of western guests who exhibit western tastes. My wife and I are avid lovers of Indian food, and after a few rounds of experimentation the restaurant staff were able to create dishes that were sufficiently “hot” for us while respectful of local Rajasthan ingredients and preparation. We took advantage of an evening of private dining and were amazed the dishes associated with our custom-designed menu. In other words, if you really like Indian food make sure the staff explicitly understands your taste(s) and tolerance.

To summarize: An incredible stay at a historic property. We just keep reliving the experience.

This really is luxury personified with a price tag to match! Stunning location and immaculately kept hotel with very attentive staff - overly so at times. We lost a hairbrush and found it had been tidied into our toothbrush bag and zipped out of sight! Have given a low rating for sleep quality as we found the bed far too hard but that is. Matter of taste.
This really is a very special experience and a must - if you can afford it. Only minus is the charge for wifi - a bit much when you are already paying through the nose. However, this is probably the most beautiful hotel we have ever stayed in.
