“Expensive Ropeway Charges”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 11, 2012

Its certainly not a value for money experience going by Ropeway, having old style trolley.Yet reaching atop the view is awsome, especially in twilight hours.

“Great views and a visit to an ancient temple”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 30, 2012

the views from the top of the ropeway are great and completely worth the trip up. If you are healthy and adventurous you could also climb up the mountain.

“Best lamp lit views of all palaces”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 30, 2012

Had scourged the web to know more about the cable car ride but didn’t find much usable information to take on this touristy attraction (website ropewayudaipur.gvw.in should help you get started). In fact we had not even planned on going there until we saw an auto rickshaw whiz past with the cable car ride attraction advertisement plastered all over it.
Like many visitors to Udaipur we too were put up on the banks of Lake Picchola. An auto rickshaw ride should not cost you more than INR 80. If heckled on the fact that there is no return / lack of return customers and that this is an “away” location, simply flag down the next auto rickshaw to take you to the jetty where boat rides of Lake Picchola are offered. This should be INR 60 or less. The walk from the Jetty to the Cable car ride station is under a mile (a little over a kilometre). However the entire climb is a mild ascent which may not be suitable for the elderly (however if you could go about the City Palace this is nothing).
There are various ticketing options available. We took the coupe option and so had the entire cable car to ourselves. Each car can sit 6 and there are 2 cars on each rope / cable. Like any cable car ride, the vistas offered are beautiful both from the car and atop the hill. You will be de-boarded right outside an eatery where the price of water and the like is nominally hiked. Alight from the left of the car, walk across the eatery and continue on till you reach a pagoda like structure (to the right of the eatery provided you are facing the lake). Walk down from there - a total distance of about 100 metres from the eatery and find yourself the perfect perch to shoot the sun setting behind the Aravalli hills, the Lake Palace, city palace and adjoining city at night. On your right you can even spot the Udaipur city railway station and the various winding city alleys leading upto it.
A coupe ticket guarantees a car quicker than the rest but that should not be a bother. Didn’t try the walk down – personally wouldn’t recommend it though. We wound our way down at 8:00pm just in time to be catch a super quick (and expensive) auto rickshaw ride to the Bagore ki haveli.

The cable car ride is a pleasant and relaxing early dusk time option and can be clubbed along with the late afternoon (around 5pm) boat ride around Lake Picchola. Not much to do otherwise - maybe a small picnic, read a book and wait for the entire city below to be lit up. Don’t forget to stock on water.
