The food at Zeal is great, but the atmosphere is a little... restauranty for me. It doesn't have a huge amount of character, there are more interesting places to eat where the food is just as good. The staff are very attentive, though.

I went to Zeal along with a couple of friends on the evening of 30-Dec-2011. I would like to mention my bill no (2744) lest one might think this review is not genuine and also in case the owner of the restaurant is reading this. We chose Zeal because it advertises itself as a true multi-cuisine restaurant and we wanted to try something different. But we discovered this to be a somewhat false claim. True, their menu does give the impression that they serve several cuisines but we found that several of their dishes had “Not available” written in pencil next to their names. Moreover, and funnily enough, all 3 of us received different menus – some of their menus have paper printouts stapled that list out additional dishes whereas other menus don’t have those printouts. The other menus have food bits stuck to them which is what one of us got! All in all, we were left not a little confused and this was definitely not the kind of start we were expecting to our evening meal.

We finally decided to have an Indian meal after all and ordered diwani handi, malai kofta, subz biryani, naan and roti. We didn’t need to wait too long for our meal but other than that we were struck by the sheer apathy and indifference of the staff. We were quite surprised that during the course of our meal not once did the chef or the restaurant manager come to our table to ask us what we thought of the meal and service. This is de rigueur in any upmarket restaurant; in fact even the vada-paav seller in my neighbourhood makes it a point to do so. Just shows that the people who run this restaurant know precious little about customer service.

With respect to the food itself, the handi subzi was brilliant and the biryani quite good. The malai kofta though was not so special – we’d asked for it to be a bit spicy but it was as bland as they come. But not bad at all overall.

Getting back to their service we were shocked to find live insects crawling on the mukhwas (fennel seeds and crystallised sugar lumps served at the end of an Indian meal) that was placed before us along with our cheque. Hate to think what else was mixed in the food we ate. We were left even more dumbfounded when the waiter, upon being shown this, simply carried away the mukhwas from our table. Yes – no apology, no regret, no new mukhwas – no, not even a word from his mouth. We then asked to speak to the manager of the restaurant. The gentleman took ages to come to our table like it was a huge bother for him and then simply uttered the most reluctant and muted apology you’re ever likely to hear. Yes, that’s it – no genuine regret, no attempt whatsoever to assuage the customer, no nothing. Don’t know if it was arrogance, indifference, lack of training or apathy – most likely a combination of all of this that ruined a perfectly good evening for us.

It’s unfortunate really, for this one could really have been a winner. They’re centrally located, the food is reasonably good and they have fine interiors. But gentlemen, fancy décor and ambience do not make a restaurant. You need to cultivate professionalism, a positive attitude and a genuine commitment towards customer service. Looks like these values are simply alien to those who run this restaurant.

A complete misnomer of a name – no zeal whatsoever in their service. Sad.
