Reading up on restaurant reviews on Tripadvisor, we decided to visit Jagat Niwas to have lunch at their rooftop restaurant during our recent trip to Udiapur. We enjoyed the ambiance and the outstanding views of Lake Pichola but had mixed results food ordered here.
With a city map or Lonely Planet book at hand, Jagat Niwas is easy enough to find by walking around in the old city. Once you find the tunnel like entrance, simply walk through hotel grounds and proceed to make your way upstairs through well-decorated grounds and you eventually find yourself in a restaurant area with stunning views over the lake. Lunch is not cheap here and in many ways you are paying for this relaxing environment and peaceful views, which is arguably worth it.
For our lunch, we ordered the Josh Rogan (315 rupee or US$5.85) that wasn't one of the better samplings of this dish we tried during our two week trip to Rajasthan. The lamb was ok but should have been softer, less chewy meat. Also, the flavor was too bland, making this a below average and pricey Josh Rogan unworthy of repeat orders (rating 2 of 5) .
We also sampled the Chicken Tikka Masala (365 rupee), which they did a much better job of preparing. The chicken was soft and the curry was nicely flavored, going very well with both Jeera Rice (125 rupee) and Garlic Naan (90 rupee)we ordered with lunch. This was a very good order, one we would happily order again (rating 4 of 5).
Drinks, like the meals were pricey. Coke (65 rupee) and a not so great Mango lassi (125 rupee) that seemed to have been made with some sort of mango syrup instead of real mango (rating 2 of 5) - probably best to just go with the regular lassi drinks if you have to pay this much.
Overall, a mixed sort of feeling about dining at Jagat Niwas . Was the food worth the price paid? - Not based on what they served us. Were the ambiance and views worth it? - Yes! Would we dine here again? Perhaps for the relaxing atmosphere and lake views. This restaurant seemed more like a good place to stop as a group to enjoy an evening, a place to meet up with friends for a round of drinks in a venue with great atmosphere. We'd recommend Jagat Niwas on this basis.
