This is a delightful gracious relic of the (mercifully) bygone days of tiger hunting. The building is full of character and the gardens are beautiful. I was thrilled to see fruit bats the size of small dogs hanging high up in the trees at dusk. The staff were very friendly and helpful though it was unclear who would get the tips I left at reception!
This isnt the place to moan about the crazy organisation (or not) of visits to the tiger reserve, but I dont know where else to do it and the hotels must take some responsibility. There is, it appears, a centrally run system for issuing permits to enter the reserve but it's ludicrously incompetent. You are told to be ready by 6.15 for a pickup at 6.30, but your name may not be called until 7.30 or 7.45. Surely a booking system can be devised that can tell people precisely when their transport will arrive? And with everyone in the hotel going to the reserve, why do most of the transports pick up just a few guests from each of several hotels, wasting precious tiger-watching time by calling in at the different hotels for pickups? Come on Indian tourism, you can do much better!

Our very brief stay at the Sawai Madhopur Lodge was most enjoyable. It was like stepping back in time to the days when Britain ruled the waves. Period photographs in the main building show that little has changed since the 1920's. It has been refurbished tastefully and made into a unique reminder of times gone by. If you are offended by tigers and leopards that have been attended to by taxidermists then this is not the place for you.
Our bungalow was spacious and well maintained, it was a perfect place to relax on the verandah. The swimming pool next to the bungalow was spotlessly clean and well supervised. For us it was a short walk to the main building from the bungalow, but make sure that you return via the same entrance. I didn't one evening and got totally lost. There are some bungalows that are quite a distance away from the restaurant, bar, etc.
All the meals that we had during our stay were excellent, being with a party travelling with Great Rail Journeys, I cannot comment on a la carte service. Our food was Indian in the main, European choices were available.
The highlight of our stay was a morning stroll through the adjacent village/town, a real Indian experience. Nearby Ranthambore National Park brings most of the visitors to the area, the chances of seeing a tiger are remote. We think that we spotted a tiger's tail 300 metres away in the bush, however, local artists sell their tiger painting in numerous shops in the village. The quality of the work varies from almost childlike to near David Shepherd quality. In fact the famous artist has been involved with local artists to good effect.
If you want to experience the shooting lodge lifestyle once enjoyed by royalty then Sawai Madhopur Lodge is the place for you. You will never forget it. We stayed at hotels in Delhi, Agra and Jaipur on our trip, they were ordinary in comparison to the Lodge.

Room Tip: Near to the main lodge building.

It was first of my Tiger Safari. Me and my wife stayed here for 3 nights.

This place was hunting lodge of local maharaj during British raj. You can see lot of stuffed animals in the premises. Even picture of Queeen Elizabeth and Prince Phillipe during one of their hunt is found on one of the walls at reception. The place is relatively closer from railway station despite we had not booked any pick up in advance when we asked directions from post arriving at station the hotel sent a vehicle immediately and Mr. Hanumant came us to receive us. This is speciality of Taj , my experience is they keep surprising you pleasantly during your stay repeatedly. He greeted us and took us to hotel. Since check in was around 2:00 pm and we came little early he quickly arranged for us without holding us till 2:00. Again Taj!!!!

First day we had not booked any Safari so we decided to rest have food and check out the property. You have bicycles kept everywhere so you can cycle around also go out of hotel into Sawai Madhopur. But since it was mid summer I kept to resort while cycling. Food spread is decent but not as large and lavish as other Taj Resorts but thats perfectly fine as main attraction is Tiger Safari.

Person who comes for first time and may find strange that everyone keep asking everybody how many sightings of tiger they had during safari. Only thing everyone talks about is Tiger Tiger and Tiger!!!!

We had some pre-booked safari and whatever safaris we asked Hotel people they have arranged it comfortably. Here generally morning safari starts around 6:00 AM so one just have tea and biscuits in the moring and breakfast go on till 12:30 ( 11:00 am one returns from morning safari).

Staff will inquire about your safari during you breakfast in non intrusive way. If you are eager to discuss they will provide you necessary explanation and other. I enjoyed it thoroughly. You need to carry best camera you have and if possible good binocular during safari.

During one of the dinner I was enquiring about a local delicacy "Lal Maas" and which day is it cooked for dinner. The manager who was nearby enquired me whether I am interested in eating when I replied yes he just smiled. On returning to dinner table "Lal Maas" exclusively cooked for me was served me on table (this was not part of menu in buffet) this was again Taj Experience!!!!

During dinner there is a live performance on some days so its fun to have dinner enjoying the same.

Overall a very good experience!! Would like to come back as in when possible!!!!

Room Tip: Book all safari in advance and prefer Gypsies against Cantor

Stayed at the Sawai Lodge for 2 nights. Very welcoming staff, shown to a room that was first class in every respect. Check-in was easy and quick. The Lodge and grounds is a beautiful place, historic, and well maintained, and a credit to the Vivanta Group of hotels. The people who work there make the effort to make your stay as good as it can be, and that was certainly appreciated by us. In particular the Operations Manager made our stay memorable by his welcome and the positive way he had responded to some requests we had made prior to the holiday.
The food was very good both at the evening meal on the terrace area and at breakfast indoors. The restaurant staff were exceptional in their desire to help and the variety and quality to food was very good.
Apart from these attractions, the hotel also caters for the daily trips to the National park for the tiger safaris. Everything is very smoothly run and the early morning safari is complimented by a later breakfast while tea/coffee refreshments are available before and after both the safaris.
There is complimentary internet which many other hotels do not have.
We would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to anyone who wants to stay in a beautiful Lodge and have a memorable and enjoyable stay.

A beautifully kept old colonial style hotel. Great rooms, good food and excellent staff. The manager does a really interesting talk on tigers and other Indian wildlife if you are interested and we were. He walks his establishment all the time, talking to the guests and setting and maintaining standards. He is the sort of man I would have working for me any day
By the way we were also lucking to see a tiger and cub besidesa all the other wildlife

We loved staying here - it was like going back in time. We found the staff very attentive and helpful. The buffet breakfast and dinner were of good quality but the highlight of the meals were the local musicians who played through out. Our room in a small bungalow near the main building was very good, comfy bed and large bathroom with big bath and big shower. The grounds werelovely but a disappointment that we didn't get to play cricket on thelawn. The icing on the cake was that we got to see a tiger!

Early 1900"s colonial hunting lodge, so close to the Ranthambore Safari park. The resort has a cricket ground, pool, badminton courts all on a large beautifully kept property. The rooms are located away from the main lodge. They have a large bathroom with the walls covered in granite in the shower and around the bathtub. Fridge door was broken, so hard to keep supplies cold. After going on a safari (no tiger sightings) we enjoyed a few hours around the pool. Paint peeling by the showers. We had food and drinks served to us by the pool. We asked to eat outside for breakfast. Everything was served graciously whenever we required anything. Do not count on the free wi-fi--even though we could get online the signal was very weak. Food was adequate.
