We went on 3 safaris, pre-booked as part of a tour. Our main disappointment was not seeing any tigers but in fact we saw very little wildlife in the park at all . Although this can obviously happen with wildlife watching, we found out afterwards that we were sent to sectors (4,5 and 6) of the park that there was almost no chance of seeing a tiger as they had to avoid 2 females with cubs and these areas were prone to poaching. However, this does not explain why there areas seemed to be devoid of other wildlife. We suspect the sectors where more tigers are seen, which seem to be around the fort, are reserved for people who have not made advance bookings and therefore need to be encouraged to go again. It was all a very far cry from the wonderful national parks of Sri Lanka which teem with bird and animal life of all sorts.

We loved it! Our morning safari in Zone 6 provided numerous sightings of various forms of deer, monkeys, peacocks and other exotic birds, wild pigs, etc., but no tigers. The afternoon safari was in Zone 2. Within 30 minutes, we spotted a tiger who proceeded to relax for us for over an hour...periodically moving into some striking poses! Thereafter, we saw three additional tigers, one of which was not 10 yards away from our jeep. It was exhilarating and a true memory of India.

Note that if you want to cruise smoothly around a zoo/game park setting, this may not be for you. It is a truly protected area and is a rugged ride for miles and miles. At the end of our second safari, we were covered in dust...AND LOVED IT! The geography is varied and spectacular at times.

Hint...consider summer if you want to see tigers. In cooler months we were told that they move into the brush, and are rarely seen during such months. Sure it is hot, but you are often in forested areas where there is plenty of shade. For us, it was seeing tigers, not the heat.

Your driver and his ride-along assistant will work hard to find animals for you. The individuals we had were good, spoke passable English (enough to clearly alert you to animals), and were kind.

If you love the outdoors and like a modest adventure, this is a trip that you will not want to miss.

Saw tigers x 2- the best was totally unexpected, our vehicle only, tiger at the side of the road snoozing- we disturbed him because the driver slammed the brakes on (unnecessary- the tiger wasn't going anywhere!!) and reversed back at speed causing pebble to spray everywhere- the tiger was fully in front of us and just a few feet away in full magnificence.Being disturbed, he got up quickly and disappeared without any of us having time to photograph him. A lovely area too but the drivers/guides have a lot to learn from their African counterparts- sorry- but it's true- the tigers needs respect shown. In the morning there were 7 or 8 vehicles pushing to get close to a tiger who was sleeping. One vehicle took a seriously dangerous risk with its occupants- i was not happy to see this and would have been even less enthralled had I been in that vehicle!! The routes are randomly chosen but apparently our shared vehicle revealed that one couple had 4 trips in to the park, visiting the same 2 areas twice and being shown/told the same things twice. This would not take much to improve so come on tourist board of India/National Parks directive/government officials - let's see it done properly then the experience would be as superb as all the other safaris we've been on before.

The tigers can mostly be seen between zone 1 and 5. The path inside is quite bad. Our gypsy broke down in the middle of the jungle and the replacement came in 1hr. It was scary. They should provide Wilkie talkie to the gypsy guys for guest safety and for emergency situation.

You should plan multiple trips. Zone 1 to 5 are great. Went to zone 6 first day and was unlucky and then the next day within 5 mins of starting in zone 2 i had the sighting of Nawab. It was brilliant.

Very well co-ordinated.
