“Has it all - One of our favorite hotels ever”

A complete package of beauty, relaxation and culture - could work as a sole destination in India. We were lucky to spend four nights in September and take advantage of affordable off-season rates. Stunning suites and views, gorgeous pool, superb food and service, cool design (traditional exterior, all-white contemporary interior), world class spa, great activities. Five minutes from the “living” Eklingi temple and serene Nagda ruins. And there's the authentic, photogenic village of Delwara right next door, where we fell in love with the people.

We didn't think the 45 minutes to Udaipur was schlep, and were happy to come home to the lush countryside every night. We started out in a marble Palace Suite with drop-dead views of the mountains and village, then were upgraded to a five-room Araveli suite, also with killer views, and and enclosed round meditation terrace. Have been pining away for it since we left.

Four days was perfect for two visits to Udaipur, many strolls in the village (go with Aktar - you'll see the amazing Jain temple, the school, meet the potter, silversmith and the embroiderers), a camel ride, a private yoga/meditation class, lots of swimming, visits to Ekglingi and Nagda (on our own with a driver) and a memorable spa treatment (2-for-1 special - Abhyanga full body oil massage, plus the Shirodhara, a slow oil drip on the forehead (the third eye).

The chefs at the magical bar will prepare upscale versions of street food. For dinner we usually split a yummy vegetarian thali. Also had the very memorable 'private dining experience' in the Sheesh Mahal, the most enchanting space in the palace.

The Palace Tour is a must-do for history buffs and anyone who has ever done a renovation. Bonus: A great 45-minute workout, if you opt not to use the elevator.

All in all, a stellar travel highlight. We were both sad to leave, and are still dreaming of Devi Garh and the surrounding countryside.

Room Tip: If you can swing it, go for the Araveli suite with the enclosed meditation terrace.

We had such a great time here, grounds are immaculately kept, rooms are contemporary clean and fee very luxury/ 5 star. It is a bit out of udaipur but pool, rooms and bar are so nice didn't want to leave. Our friends got married here and was very well organised and we liked it here so much we stayed on for three more nights. Services great and feel very safe as woman which haven't in other hotels. Bar is very cool and ibiza vibe but good for families here too. Very clean

They offer free camel rides and water by pool. Spa and pool are amazing.
Only thing I'd say is they overcharge for taxis so best to collect card of driver that drops you off so ou can save money there.

Also got bit bored of same restaurant after a week but out of 100 people at wedding no one got sick from food, very good, although many got sick elsewhere in udaipur

It is a beautiful hotel, with excellent service. However like many Forts, it is not designed for handicapable guests and young kids. We spent just a night here and it was a hike from Udaipur airport. The welcome was exceptionally warm. The setting sun made the Fort glow. After we checked-in, we took advantage of the complimentary camel rides. A wee bit scary but worth it!

Over drinks we asked about our complimentary dinner - courtesy of I Prefer - expecting some cheap buffet! We were told that we could order anything we wanted from the menu and they really meant anything and everything! They served us with style and thoughtfulness. When one of us did not order an appetizer, they brought her a dish to taste. Exquisite service with exceptional food. Try the Thali, it comes with unlimited refills - unlike at Oberoi Udaivilas! Oh, they also surprised the honeymooning couple with a cake but by then, it was too late as we were very well satiated!

So , why not perfect? After the sumptuous breakfast next morning, we walked/climbed around the property and discovered that most of the rooms in the upper tower were empty. Why then did they give us - and others - a room in the Garden area versus a room with a view?! A missed opportunity!

BTW, the Garden room was more like a Junior Suite and was very very nice. It had a veranda where we enjoyed our morning tea.

The other 'lack of perfection' was the staff moving/setting tables after breakfast around the pool. while we were trying to enjoy the pool. When we pointed out the not-so-clean hot tub, the staff immediately got to work.

Overall, worth a visit. Stay longer to unwind and enjoy the very well trained staff. The GM, Mr. Upadhya (?) is an outstanding host!

Room Tip: If you are willing to climb - or take the elevator - ask for the rooms above the restaurant.

Four of us stayed here several nights in late January and as much as I would like to say that it was a wonderful experience, there were some service flaws that marred an otherwise enjoyable experience. The good: This is a beautiful place, with gorgeous and comfortable rooms, nice amenities, good spa, and a setting that has to be seen to be believed. The yoga teacher was one of the best we encountered in India, the wait staff and chef were helpful and friendly, even to the point of typing out the recipe for their delicious lentil soup. Unfortunately the food, with the exception of a few excellent dishes (the shrimp moilee, grilled chicken legs, and the aforementioned soup) was just alittle above average which is a shame due to the high cost.
The bad: The front desk staff was brusque and seemed disinterested. Devi Gahr is a beautiful facility but you basically had to discover it on your own; there was no map or suggestions of places on site to see and explore. (In the last hour before we had to depart, we walked around some of the fort and saw some great places (billiard room, meditation porches, etc) which were never mentioned to us. The bellmen who brought up our luggage pointedly lingered until we came up with a tip, and then seemed to argue who should get more of it. The final straw however was the incompetence of a front desk clerk who sold me the incorrect postage for 15 pieces of mail, even after I questioned her if the amount for overseas mail was enough. It was only the next day, when I went to mail some additional things, that another front desk clerk told me that I needed a lot more postage for my letters. Since they had already mailed my previous letters, I became quite upset because I realized that they would never reach their destination. The obligatory "We're sorry," left such a bad taste that I fumed for several days about how they could have someone so incompetent at the front desk while I had to rewrite the lost 15 letters.
I would love to return here sometime and explore more of the place and enjoy more of the offerings, but I would be highly apprehensive when dealing with the front desk.

From the time you walk into this majestic palace, every bit of the experience is royal. The welcome, the meals, the rooms, the hospitality and the views. I would love to revisit this excellent property over and over again.

I will start with the positives. Devi Gahr is very beautiful. Standing on top of a hill, it has outstanding views for miles around. Physically all rooms are lovely, modern design with a Zen ambience. We had a garden suite with an outside terrace which we could not fault. Most of the staff are friendly and professional, such as the staff round the pool, the bar staff and the restaurant staff. A special mention of the executive chef Uttam, who took us to see his lovely organic vegetable garden (with samples to try) and made us special lemon grass tea.
We also like the free (10 min.) camel and horse rides and the lovely walk through the village led by a very friendly local young man. So far so good.

The negatives. Three out of 4 lights on our terrace were broken, so we could not read there in the evening. After reporting it, 1 light was fixed. The other ones were left with all the wires hanging out. Dangerous, to say the least.
On our last night we had a leak in the toilet. This must have been an ongoing problem, known about by the staff, as the wall behind the pan was soaked through. The floor was flooded and we needed to put on covered shoesin order to use the toilet. The front desk staff did not seem too bothered by this. We were!

Minor irritations. The bathroom was wonderful, lovely toiletries, but the towels, as one other reviewer also commented on, were thin and hard.
The front desk staff, although polite, seemed hurried and did not have much time for the guests. On shown around the hotel, the ladyconducting the tour even interrupted her tour with the remark "excuse me, I just have to talk for a moment to a VERY IMPORTANT GUEST". Maybe a language/cultural blib, but not a good one.
Food and drink are expensive. Some very ordinary wines from the New World clock up nearly £80.00. Also we found the ambience slightly sterile, not Indian, you could be anywhere in the world.
The grading is done for the surroundings, and the attitude of most of the staff, but we had many reservations. .

We recently had a wedding organized and held at Devi Garh. Our experience at the hotel was two-fold. First, it is important to note that the hotel staff was extremely professional, friendly, and helpful. The attention to detail and treatment of the guests was exceptional. It would have been ideal to stop here with the review. It is however important for us to acquaint future guests of some unpleasant incidents that tainted our experience. We had paid for the entire hotel (ALL ROOMS) for ONE DAY. Even though we did not have guests to occupy all the rooms, the aim was to have PRIVACY during the event. This was an idea initially sold to us by the reservation staff in Gurgaon. Unfortunately, our privacy was NOT honored by the hotel management. We observed that during our ONE DAY stay, part of the hotel (restaurant) was being used to host outside guests – NOT GUESTS OF THE WEDDING PARTY. This was very disappointing, as one would not expect this type of treatment from a hotel that claims to be a boutique hotel of the ‘highest’ standard. A second, unpleasant experience was with the behavior of the front desk office. Having paid for ALL the rooms, we were treated to foul tempered behavior by the front office when we requested keys to one of the rooms that we had paid for. The treatment we got was completely offensive and disappointing. Yes, we received an apology, the next morning. The experience did however taint our experience. Finally - the food! The hotel prides itself in the variety and quality of food, rightly so! The food was excellent. Unfortunately, we were deprived of some of the dishes that we had EXPLICITLY, REPEATEDLY requested for dinner. All in all our experience at Devigarh was quite memorable, save some of the unpleasantness.
