“Great welcoming guest house in Jodhpur”
Reviewed May 24, 2011

A really warm and nice family runs this place.
Just feel like at home. We arrived late at night but they took the time to show us every room and to cook us a comforting dinner after a hard day of travel.
Rooms are big, clean and quiet. The guest house is really spacious with differents spots where you can eat, juste have a glass of chai, or read, or whatever...
It was off season so they had the time to talk with us and to help us on our next travel,
even to introduce us the association they've created which helps indian women.

Great place !
if we come back to Jodphur, we'll go there !!!
warmly recommended !!

One of the best guest houses I have been to in terms of service and value for money. My husband and I arrived at Durag Niwas at 9 p.m. and despite having no reservations, we were immediately accommodated and ushered into our rooms in less than 10 minutes upon our arrival.

Well, I guess not that hidden anymore, as anyone who has stayed here leaves this place amazed. The rooms are simple, but all the communal places are gorgeously painted in an Indian style. The rooms are cheap and clean. The restaurant is really one big table in the middle of the courtyard, which is great for meeting fellow travellers. The food is generally good, and the service could not be better. The owners and their staff do everything they can to make you feel at home here. The only regret I have is not having spend more time here.

This family run haveli makes you feel at home straight away. The family and guests are incrediably friendly and welcoming. The home cooked food is a delight. The only real disadvantage is it is quite a way out of town, but it is close to a whole lot of 'antique' stores, which have some fantastic objects. The haveli is home to the Sambhali Women's Trust which is run by one of the brothers. This is a charity which helps girls and women in desert villages with education and skills. Some visit the haveli each day and others are helped in their villages.

We arrived weary from a long and dusty journey. The open central courtyard, with rooms on various levels, is painted in bright colours and adorned with Rajasthani paintings. It was a charming beginning to our too-short stay.

Govind and his family make you welcome from the moment you arrive, leaving you to decide if you want to jump into busy 'homestay' family life or simply chill on your own. There is a quiet roof space with cushions to sit on and saris blowing in the breeze for shade. Most rooms have access to a balcony; if not then the 'garden' front area is a quiet place to relax over breakfast or a drink.

We became fascinated by the charity work Govind does for local women. He set up the Sambhali Trust a few years ago and it has grown.
"It is not my passion: it is my dedication," he says.
Women from Jodhpur and the surrounding desert villages -- mostly from Dalit or poor families -- are given the means to support themselves through education and micro-credit sponsorship.

We enjoyed Mukta's cooking enormously, eating with family members and other patrons at their long courtyard table. It is a great way to meet others and to swap tales of travel and India.

Don't come here if you want silver service in trendy surroundings or white fluffy towels in marble bathrooms. It is basic accommodation, but there is hot water in each ensuite and the beds are comfortable. Despite the various calls to prayer and festivities going on around us most nights (very common in India) we slept like logs.

I have visited Durag Niwas 3 times (2007, 2010, 2011) & each time I extend my stay. This family home is the perfect place to stay when traveling. The rooms are cute, clean, comfortable and tastefully decorated so you instantly feel that you can put your bags down and have a rest. The main charm of the place is the gorgeous central courtyard where you can sit and eat/drink, meet other travelers, chill out and all this while the family's regular life is going on as this is their home. Govind, Mukta and their family are incredibly welcoming and always super friendly no matter how many questions you have or how many things you may need. Food is home cooked and in the evening you have the choice to eat typical family food of rice, veg, chapatti. This is wonderful. I have found all services to be extremely efficient - breakfast, lunch, dinner, laundry, ticket booking, village tour, shopping help, trip planning guidance. On arrival you are given a map of Jodhpur and a list of locals' insight tips that include delightful details such as where to eat the best lassi, samosa, omlette shop, 40rs into town etc... Other details that make a difference are a library borrow & exchange and free wifi or a computer for guests to use on an honesty system. You can lounge on the roof terrace on large cushions shaded by sari curtains during the day with a great view of the fort and palace. The Sambhali Trust that works to help empower women and girls from Dalit (untouchable) communities was founded by Govind - the guesthouse owner. Workshops and training take place on the first floor of this gorgeous guesthouse. Volunteers are long term guests. This also is another reason to stay at Durag Niwas.

Durag Niwas is great because of the honest service and values of the managing team. The services offered (laundry, internet, tours, etc.) are plenty, the restaurant serves some great hot sandwiches and french fries (if you're sick of all the naan and dal...), there's a comfy rooftop pillow area great for relaxing with some local wine and the sunset illuminating the distant hilltop fort. On-site, Durag Niwas is also home to Sambhali Trust, which helps young women get a leg up with English and other practical skills. If you have time, you're welcome to help out.

The prices are unbeatable, though the room quality could be improved. They were a little dusty and dingy (both the 2 double rooms on the first floor and the suite upstairs), and if this can be improved upon, then the guys will have an even better guest house. Their motto says it all: "COME AS A TOURIST- STAY AS A GUEST - LEAVE AS A FRIEND." Couldn't agree more.

(For reference, we stayed at the following places over a 2 week tour: Delhi (Hotel Kwality, 2*, Park New Delhi, 5*), Agra (Hotel Sheela, 2*), Jaipur (Hotel Pearl Palace, 4*), Jodhpur (Durag Niwas Guest House, 3*), Udaipur (Kankarwa Haveli, 5*)and Jaisalmer (Hotel Jeet Mahal, 3*).)

This household has always been welcoming guests and enjoying giving others hospitality for many years. We remember when we were very young boys our Grandpa hosted many parties of all the important local family including the Army, Police, Politicians and Royalty. We remember walking down the road being welcomed by the sound of laughter and music and we knew Grandpa was having another one of his parties! We have carried on this tradition ever since by welcoming guests and hoping that they experience some of the culture and traditions that happen throughout the year in an old traditional house including Diwali - festival of lights -, Holi - festival of colours - and many other celebrations. A Rajput family run home stay, simple, clean room with many windows for fresh air and natural light. Private bathroom with 24 hour hot shower. Home cooked delicious meals available.
