Fanstastic Fort with a lot of history. The audio guide is really good. Expect to do a lot of walking and climbing.

“Must see in Jodhpur”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 25, 2013

This was the first sight I saw in India! Must see if in Jodhpur. Allow for 2-3 hours. We went around 12-1 pm in October and I really struggled with the heat. Go earlier if you can to take shelter from the sun - Jodhpur is much hotter than Jaipur, or what I've experienced in rest of Rajasthan (didn't visit Jaisalmer). We took the audio guide and found it very satisfactory.

“Best in Rajhasthan ”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 24, 2013 via mobile

This really is the best of several forts in my opinion. The views are spectacular.

Also included in the tourist price is a free audio guide, which is a nice little bonus as I'd normally not pay extra for this, but it was great to learn the history.

I'd go as far as saying its worth adding Jodhpur to your itinerary for this!

Thank NateLew

“Fort of all Forts !!! - Travel Tips from my Visit”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 24, 2013

This to me is the best forts I have seen. Sheer monstrosity of the fort - its a marvel how they constructed it.

The fort has a short uphill walk from the parking to the ticket counter, where you have the option of taking a elevator to the topmost floor (Rs 30/person) one way only. I would advice take the elevator to save your energy for viewing and not trekking up !!!

Once you reach the topmost floor(by the elevator) we get to see multiple view points of the blue hued city before we can get into the courtyard with the exhibit rooms.

NOTE - All the exhibit rooms ENTRANCES are confined to THIS floor, so make sure you enter and exit each and every room. You have the a)Cradle/Palanquin gallery, b)Armoury Section,
c)The elephant Howdah Section, and the d) Daulat Khana - the 3 storied building. The entry to the 4 period rooms - **Sheesh Mahal, **Phool Mahal, **Takhat Vilas and **Moti Mahal are also here on higher floors - entry via the Painting Gallery . Sheesh Mahal is in the adjoining corridor of the Painting Gallery along with the textile gallery, the other 3 period rooms are on higher floors.

On you way down you can see the temple and also the hand print of Sati Women engraved on the wall. The way down has to be walked and elevator usage for way down is only for disabled(though they might allow it for Senior Citizens - you can check it with the lift operator).

NOTE - There are 2 exits once you start walking down. Be sure to ask for the way to Parking Lot where vehicles are parked the moment you see multiple paths otherwise you might end up walking a Looooong way down without realising.
Unfortunately there were no signs for this and we ended up walking a long way down passing by flyingfox etc.. .before a security guard on the way informed us and we had to trek back up again. I think the gate you need to ask for is Jai Pol.

Jodhpur was unbearingly hot(even in October) so better to take lots of water and plan it as soon as it opens in the morning. Plan for 2-3 hours .

“Magnificent fort”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 24, 2013

The imposing Maherangarh Fort that towers over the city of Jodhpur is huge in scale and ambition. It has been well preserved and is definitely the main reason to travel to the city. The audio tour included in the ticket price is very informative and interesting with options to hear more about specific aspects of the history and culture of the area. The views from the ramparts are worth the trip alone, but the Fort is so much more thanks to the excellent museum. It's a great chance to see how the Maharajas once lived.
