“Jodhpur's Anchor!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 22, 2013

The clock tower is like a giant pin that holds Jodhpur down. Only when I saw it from the dizzy heights of Mehrangarh fort did I appreciate the central position this landmark occupies in the city. Now of course Jodhpur has multi-level buildings, but it is easy to imagine how, for decades, the clock tower would have been the tallest building around. Around the tower is a busy market, with lots of budget hotels for tourists, shops oriented towards tourists (such as spice shops) but also a number of shops/hand carts/ pavement stalls selling everything from bangles to plastic slippers! Behind the clock tower and perpendicular to it is a busy lane where we visited 'Bibaji's Bangle' store,a hole in the wall shop run by a family, which doesn't look very impressive from outside, but inside is a treasure trove of bangles made of every possible material and every impossible colour. The area around the clock tower is not for the faint hearted, with the usual collection of stray cattle and zooming motorbikes, but it is a slice of 'real' Jodhpur...

“The hub of the city”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 22, 2013

The clock tower is an interesting structure built close to the Sadar market in the old city from where there is a nice view of the fort. It is really the market itself that is more the attraction rather than the tower but nevertheless, well worth a couple of pictures. Close to the tower is the omelette man, well worth a stop for lunch. 35r for a two egg omelette between two slices of toast and a diet coke! Probably the best lassi can be found in a shop next to the gate close to the clock tower.

“Congested”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 18, 2013

If you have visited the Nai Sarak market, visiting further onwards to clock tower for the sake of handicrafts is meaningless. Ganpati Art Emporium at the beginning of Nai Sarak and Janta Sweets at the opposite will quench your thirst of getting a glimpse of Jodhpur colors. Its very congested near the clock tower, especially of you happen to get diverted towards the alley just outside the gate moving right. As far as the charm of old city is concerned, I found old city of Lucknow more colorful. Old cities are as a whole colorful and crowded. Better always to park your car (in this case the parking is far away near Nai Sarak) and walk by foot. Jaipur has really funny looking autos (equivakent to Thai tuk-tuk), which may be resorted to for travelling to a distance. But walking is the best mode to explore.

“bustling market!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 17, 2013

the market around the clock tower makes for great walks. you can get anything from street food to dress-up gear here. the people are sweet and friendly and most things come dirt cheap. plus, it offers a zillion photo opportunities.
